Calendars of Kavrillia

The calendars used by Lanarians and Vincarans are quite different.  The Vincaran year zero is 2776 years earlier than the Lanarian year zero.
No one knows when the Vincaran calendar was first devised, but it is believed to have been around the time Ozazo was founded. Contemporary astronomers extrapolated from the oldest surviving lists of rulers to arrive at the approximate year their ancestors first invented written language. They set this historical benchmark as year zero, and believed themselves to be living 1551 years later. They chose this specific number because palindromes are deeply revered in their culture and it seemed an auspicious year to establish their new capital. Modern archaeology and dating techniques show they were remarkably accurate, plus or minus two hundred years.
The Lanarians use what is called the Melzeen calendar, in which year zero is when Melsar the Conqueror first set out from Shalanera in his quest to unite the known world under his banner.  That is considered the founding date for the Lanarian Empire, even if it took decades for Melsar's vision to become a reality.  Years before zero are simply given as negative numbers:  e.g. Melsar himself was born in -18.
