The Fertiti-Wali Dam Works: The Largest and Most Impressive Structure in Kermoria

In the heart of the Pridelands lies a structure that dwarfs all others: the Fertiti-Wali Dam Works. This massive dam, spanning over 400 feet in length and standing over 200 feet tall, is the largest and most impressive structure in all of Kermoria. Constructed by the Great Kingdom centuries ago, the dam serves as the primary line of defense against the raging waters of the Okoniawai River during the wettest months of the year.
While its primary function is to protect the citizens of Diaspora, the massive structure also provides a wealth of other benefits to the people of The Great Kingdom. The waters of the dam are redirected through a series of locks and channels, creating a cascading waterfall that provides power to a staggering 16 overshot water mills. This method of cascading water, known as the step-down method, is a highly efficient way of harnessing the power of falling water.
The Fertiti-Wali Dam Works is home to the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the entire world. The sixteen water mills, each with its own set of gears and cogs, work tirelessly day and night to produce a vast array of goods and products. The mills are responsible for grinding flour, sawing lumber, pressing oil, and much more. The sheer volume of goods produced by the mills is staggering, and they provide much-needed resources for the people of Diaspora, and even the entire Kingdom.
In addition to powering the mills, the Fertiti-Wali Dam Works also provides a vital source of irrigation for the surrounding farmland. When the waters of the Okoniawai River are at their highest, the dam is closed, and the waters are redirected into a vast network of canals and channels. These channels provide much-needed water to the crops, ensuring that they grow strong and healthy.
The dam works are also responsible for creating an expansive reservoir, which is used to store water during the rainy season. This water is then used to supply the city of Diaspora with drinking water and to irrigate the crops during the dry season. The reservoir is a vital resource for the people, as it helps to ensure that they have access to clean drinking water and can maintain their agricultural production even during times of drought.
The construction of the Fertiti-Wali Dam Works was a monumental feat of engineering. The sheer size and scale of the dam required an enormous amount of resources and manpower. The Great Kingdom invested heavily in the project, bringing in workers from all corners of the land to help with the construction.  Engineers from House Tonath-Men oversaw the construction, and it was ultimately their design which still stands today.
The dam is constructed primarily of stone and brick, which were sourced from quarries located along the Okoniawai River. The sheer volume of materials required to construct the dam is staggering; if laid end-to-end, the bricks and stones used to build the dam would stretch for miles, from the Bridge of the Gods in Edeli all the way to the northern end of Graev's Gate!
The workers who constructed the dam faced numerous challenges along the way. The raging waters of the Okoniawai River posed a constant threat, and many workers lost their lives during the construction process. The harsh climate of the Pridelands also presented significant challenges, with extreme temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions making the work even more difficult.
Despite these challenges, the workers persisted, and the dam was eventually completed. The Fertiti-Wali Dam Works stands today as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the people of The Great Kingdom. The dam has provided a wealth of resources to the people of the Pridelands for centuries and will continue to do so for many more to come.
