Lake Gwenalion

Lake Gwenalion is a vast, shimmering body of water located in the heart of Therengia. The lake feeds into the Gwenalion Fens, a treacherous swamp renowned for its dangerous inhabitants and foreboding aura. The Fens are believed to be home to trolls, hostile dryads, and even a green or black dragon. But Lake Gwenalion is more than just a source of fear and mystery. It is a place of beauty and wonder, with pristine waters that reflect the bright blue sky and lush green foliage that surrounds it. The lake is so large that it is said to be impossible to see across, and its depths are said to be unfathomable.   One of the lake's most intriguing features is its rumored portal to the elemental plane of water. This secret gateway is said to be hidden in a deep, underwater cave that can only be reached by the most daring of adventurers. Some speculate that the portal is guarded by a powerful dragon turtle, while others claim that it is protected by powerful water elementals.   Despite the rumors of danger and mystery that surround Lake Gwenalion, it is still an important part of daily life for many inhabitants of the surrounding area. Ferries regularly cross the river that flows from the lake, carrying goods and people from the town of Riverhaven to the logging village of Langenfirth and beyond. Fishermen can often be seen casting their lines from the shores of the lake, hoping to catch the abundant fish that call it home.   The lake is also a popular destination for tourists and adventurers, who come to explore the nearby ruins of ancient civilizations and search for hidden treasures. Whether you come to gaze upon its serene beauty or to uncover its deepest secrets, Lake Gwenalion is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit it.

Geography

Formed of what can only be assumed was once a volcanic crater, Lake Gwenalion is the deepest known freshwater lake in all Kermoria.  Though no official record exists, survey attempts have recorded depths greater than a thousand feet in several locations, and have been thus far unable to locate the bottom in what is perceived to be the center of the lake.

Serving as a crucial crossroads between the Faldesu River  and Jantspyre River , the deep current and undertows claim dozens of victims every year, but offers passage to ships and trade from as far east as the Reshal Sea, and as far north as Rossman's Landing .

Ecosystem

Teeming with wildlife, Lake Gwenalion is a vital source of fishing, trapping, and crabbing for the entire populace of Therengia.  The settlements of Rossman's Landing and Langenfirth are nestled onto it's shores, and both were founded based on the bounty of resources that could be found there.  Dozens of other villages and hamlets dot it's shores, all benefiting from the abundance of wildlife in or around the lake.

There are rumors of monsters living in the lake, with eyewitnesses describing giant turtles, creatures with numerous tentacles, even some sort of giant, long-necked lizards, but none of these have ever been confirmed by reliable or governmental sources.

Ecosystem Cycles

As winter sets in, many of the smaller hamlets and villages, including Langenfirth , sprout to life as hunters, gatherers, furriers and trappers converge on the area to trap and cull the abundance of game along the lake's shores.  Beaver, muskrat, mink, and otters are plentiful, as well as many other, more exotic creatures such as bears and even the occasional wolverine.  In the springtime, as the lake thaws, fish begin to bloom back to life, drawing bears and other predators from their dens to feast on the bounty the lake offers for the spring and summer months, before slowly retreating to the mountain dens as winter once again sets in.

Tourism

Though Lake Gwenalion isn't much of an attraction in and of itself, it is a vital waterway between major cities and seems quite a bit of traffic.  Several intrepid businessmen have even set up private boat services which cross the lake for pleasure or for travel, and the Barony has established a public barge system which travels between Riverhaven and Langenfirth , with two barges making the trek on opposing schedules.
