Emperor of Therengia
Appointment
In early 222, Baron Blaine Gifford declared himself Blaine I, Emperor of Therengia.
Responsibilities
As the de-facto Mayor of Therenborough, the Emperor is responsible for the running of the city, as well as the provinvce as a whole. As the destination for many religious pilgrimages, the Baron must outwardly appear to maintain religious neutrality, so as not to appear to favor any deity over another.
Now that Therengia has been declared an empire, the Emperor's day to day routine is far more concerned with the maintenance of borders and the preparations for inevitable war with what he feels are the lesser provinces.

History
Originally, the title of Baron(ess) of Therengia was given to the wealthiest and most influential of the land owners in the province. Over time, however, this practice eventually led to the same family holding the title, as the power granted by the office often padded their coffers and influence even more. The Gifford family has held the title of Baron of Therengia for nine generations, since 21BD when Arcturis Tenderfoot, a Halfling without an heir, died unexpectedly in his sleep.
After declaration as an Emperor in 222, the Gifford family now holds the rulership of Therengia in perpetuity.

Cultural Significance
The title of Emperor holds the weight of the crown of Zoluren, and comes with all the pomp and circumstance one might expect from the leader of a nation, especially one who's borders are the largest in the known world. Including the estimated size of the Velakan desert, Therengia is more than twice the size of Ilithi and nearly so of Zoluren.
