Egypt

The Kingdom of Egypt is a nation in North Africa that borders the Kingdom of Hejaz, British controled Sudan, and Italian Libya.

History

The Sultanate of Egypt had been a part of the Ottoman Empire until the Anglo-Egyptian War established a British protectorate of the region in 1882. Foreign investors began to pour into Egypt, though were nominally exempt from Egyptian taxes and laws under British and European status.   With the outbreak of the Great War in 1915, Egypt, as part of the British Empire, was forced to defend British interests in the region against the Ottoman Empire. In 1918, an Egyptian delegation was organized and presented to the British representative, wishing to make their case in London and the peace negotiations for an independent Egypt. Though the representative was sympathetic, the government in London denied their request. The four leaders of the delegation were arrested and exiled to the island of Malta. This sparked outrage in Egypt, leading to riots and protests. With the war still waging, Britain was unable to spare the resources to quell the rebellion, and thus recognized Egyptian independence in 1919.   Elections were held in 1920, which saw the independence delegation win in a landslide. Sultan Fuad I was named King of Egypt. Among the first acts of the new Egyptian government was to remove itself from the Great War. However, negotiations had already begun to end the war, and Egypt exited just months before the official end.   Following the war, the Egyptian government began to press Britain over their claims in Sudan. Pro-Egyptian riots in Sudan began to occur in 1924.
