Maria Guerrero

Empress Maria Guerrero

Maria Dolores Guerrero was the liberal claimant Empress of Mexico and daughter of Emperor Vicente Guerrero. She was the first heir to the throne of Mexico.  In 1827, she was married to Augustin Iturbide. The marriage between Augustin and Maria was a peace arrangement between their fathers following the ensuing First Mexican Civil War between the liberal ruling House Guerrero and the conservative opposition led by House Iturbide. The two were intended to rule as co-rulers, but this never came to be. Upon the death and suspected assassination of her father, she ascended the throne. Subsequently, Augustin declared himself the sole Emperor and declared war . She married her son, Vicente II to Princess Maria of America in order to gain American support. She was victorious, though was unable to rule as Empress due to misogynistic ideals on the Imperial Congress, believing a woman had no place on the throne. She was allowed to rule as regent until her son turned 16 and took the throne for himself.
