Bugbear

“War Callers” – Bugbears are hobgoblins that have been subjected to alchemical enhancements. Identified as prodigies during nugakmog, they were separated out and given special food, special training, and overall more individual care. Unlike hobgoblins, they are encouraged to think more independently, and act as commandos, champions, assassins and partisans for the legion. They also enforce rules and oversee workmobs and warmobs of goblins.   Whereas weak hobgoblins can expect exile or menial labor as their fate, bugbears tend to simply be killed by their fellows.   Bugbears have more freedom and more independent thought, and therefore have a somewhat higher desertion rate than hobgoblins. Given the work that bugbears do as assassins, all lone wanderers are regarded as “vras”, or assassin in the goblin tongue. When not killed on sight, they are treated with suspicion and scorn. Bugbears that wander sometimes do so looking for purpose, as the hobgoblins in them yearns for structure while the bugbear training and mutations desire individuality and makes them eager to prove their worth.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Bugbear training teaches brevity, so their accents tend to be gruff and clipped.

Culture and cultural heritage

Their subculture is on the fringes of the hobgoblins' . They stalk the shadows around the legion camps, keep to their own berthing and supply themselves with meat and loot instead of taking from the legion stores. Their independent streak makes them less trusted by the hobgoblins, though it’s not uncommon to find them among the officers’ corps where their strength and independent thought can both do some good for the legion. Bugbears are indoctrinated in a much-relaxed form of Fotakari that prioritizes pragmatism and decisive action.

Common Etiquette rules

Bugbear never ask for a favor without first issuing a threat.

Common Dress code

Bugbear wear their kills. Necklaces of ears, hides made of mingled bear and human skin, a kilt made of goblin hides stitched together are all common sights. Most bugbears would rather go naked than wear something killed by someone else.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Bugbear use enormous two handed morning stars with wicked spikes.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Bugbear children are always hobgoblins

Coming of Age Rites

Bubear have to slay a monster to end their nugakmog and return to their trainers wearing its skin.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Bugbear bury their dead in the same way as hobgoblins, upright in full battle dress.

Common Taboos

Bugbear will not eat meat or wear hide from creatures they didn't kill.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Bugbears look like hobgoblins, but they are always larger and thicker, and they always have a pelt. Bugbear beauty both male and female boils down to volume of fur, and volume of muscle.

Gender Ideals

Similar to hobgoblins but especially true for bugbears, males and females are placed into their roles by prowess and merit regardless of other factors.

Courtship Ideals

Bugbear are intense when pursuing a courtship. Often, a suitor will walk up to their intended and suckerpunch them as hard as possible. In the confusion, they will truss their intended up and what follows is a serious beating until the intended relents. Hobgoblins that believe they have caught the eye of a bugbear tend to go to bed armed, just in case.

Relationship Ideals

Bugbears are as likely to mate with each other as they are hobgoblins. Their offspring are always hobgoblins, though they have a slightly higher tendency to be chosen for bugbear training.
