Basic Information

Anatomy

They have Webbed feet and Hands, as well as finned wrists. otherwise completely humanoid. Gilled and Lunged, Oscars can breath easily under water, and in air. Oscars must be submerged in water fully once every 24 hours for at least 10 minutes.

Genetics and Reproduction

Breeding Pairs of Oscars can successfully lay dozens of eggs under water every couple years. The eggs gestate for several months, then the fry are born as very small humanoids. The fry-babies are required to stay in the water for the first few years of their lives.

Growth Rate & Stages

After the first few years being completely reliant on water, the Oscar's musculature develops enough that they can be out of the water for more than a few minutes at a time. Becoming full grown around their 15th year, Oscars life cycle usually follows pretty closely to that of humans, if not a couple decades shorter.

Ecology and Habitats

Oscars can survive in Brackish, or fresh water. They can live in salt water, but it is considered uncomfortable to them, they can also live a long and healthy life on land provided they submerge themselves once or twice a day. They prefer caves to open water and smaller rooms to vast spaces.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Oscars are omnivores, they prefer to take their food in the water. But on land they will usually put their food into their drink and consume it while "drinking" it. They require the same diet as humans, except they use extra water, and will eat things humans traditionally find "gross".

Biological Cycle

Every Couple years after reaching adolescence the male and female of the species have an urge to pair up and mate. Mating and parentage only lasts until the children are not dependent on the parents anymore. Oscar parents have been known to "accidentally" eat their children, despite being very territorial and fierce to keep predators away from their frys.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Equipped with 2 Large eyes on the sides of their heads they can see very well in dark and murky waters, as well as the ability to smell very well underwater, able to discern different sources of the odors.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Oscars tend to be named after their fore bearers, their first names being traditionally two syllables long. Mating pairs will take a third name temporarily or permanently as a sort of last name for their offspring. This last name is one syllable long and will form the first syllable of all the children's names.   Ackbar and Torlou mate, they choose the name Gar they have three children that survive to adolescence. Gardel, Garfet, and Garpon.

Gender Ideals

It is VERY hard to tell the difference between Male and Female Oscars, Their sex organs are entirely internal. They don't care if you misgender them, tending to prefer the terms "they/them" to make it easier for everyone not of that species.

Courtship Ideals

Generally male Oscars will bring a female a rock or stone. They like very round, smoothed, rocks of varying color. They do prefer naturally hewn rocks though, as carved or shaped rocks are generally considered tacky, or would be outright insulting to the female.

Relationship Ideals

Oscars prefer mates that are healthy, and generally of good coloring. Stress will make their natural color less striking, and therefore less suited as a mate.

Average Technological Level

reliant almost exclusively on siren and Seadora technology they have no true technology of their own.

History

Born as experiments, then produced as a labour force. Oscars generally have their freedom since the fouling of the bay. They now reside in and around the edges of the bay. Never venturing in. They also live in large numbers in Seadora, as second class citizens.

Historical Figures

Bratoc ret - While its not known who officially struck the last Pickax blow that created the fouling of the bay But Bratoc was the only survivor of the expedition the day the underwater volcano erupted in the underwater palace. He said it was pure luck he happened to be close to the entrance of the Palace.
