The Mouldering Alcove
General Summary
Professor Saryx Surinaal called on MJ and Kingra to bring their specialist knowledge and abilities to bear to investigate an issue involving ambulatory mould in a flooded basement. She took the party to her teaching building on the edge of the Ebbenvogel Halls. There they encountered gnome-sized fungus beings in the process of clumsily stealing the classroom's books, overseen by a vicious and cunning quadrapedal eel-like creature.
After defeating the regenerating fungus with fire and MJ's necrotizing spores, and felling the fleeing eel hound, they descended into the filthy, stagnant basement, filled with muddy saltwater and encrusted with mould, filth, and detritus. Malformed fish, crustaceans, and seaweed grew here, ruled over by a hideous, crotchety old witch named Sallie Mildew.
Kingra swam easily through the flooded rooms, arriving at the crone's sanctum. The reclusive sea hag begrudgingly invited the party to enter. Ryke turned a magical cloth patch into a window and opened a dry path in, much to Mildew's displeasure.
The hag had spent years gathering up, restoring, and organizing the ruined books of the basement stacks, in her own strange way involving various waterproofing fluids and waxes of unsavoury origin. She had sent her 'fungus babies' to gather fresh books to grow her collection, but promised she would stop, if the characters promised to visit and bring gifts and offerings.
Sallie Mildew identified a common enemy: the night hag that had murdered Eregast's students when the wards had failed. She and her coven were dangerous rivals that threatened to destabilize Mildew's hermitage. If the party could ensure she would keep her lair, she would provide information on the hags to help the party defeat them. Starting with the name of the night hag: Olga Wormwiggle.
