Space Travel
Space travel is a resource-intensive way to transport small to medium quantities of people or resources between planets or moons. Popularised during the Colonial Era by TerrAstris, interplanetary travel became commercially viable between the years of 24 and 60 AFC. Regularly scheduled flights were chartered between the Inner Planets, with occasional flights inwards to the Gehdon Belt, and outwards to the Vokta Belt.
Routes
At the peak of the Colonial Era (between 40 and 58 AFC), the standard routes were:- Sechia ↔️ Trewa [80 pp]
- Sechia ↔️ Ucenov only during months where the planets' orbits are close to each other [100 pp]
- Trewa ↔️ any inner planet apart from Sechia; Gehdon Belt [200 pp]
Propellants
It requires excessive amounts of rocket propellant in order to achieve liftoff, especially on planets with high gravity. Types of rocket propellant include- Standard hexamine-based explosive propellants, suitable for short flights. Fuel was relatively cheap during the Colonial Era, but takes up substantial space that could otherwise be used to store cargo.
- Ionic thrusters. Ion thrust engines are practical only in the vacuum of space and cannot take vehicles through the atmosphere because ion engines do not work in the presence of ions outside the engine. Standard explosive propellants are often fitted in conjunction with the ion thrusters to aid with takeoff and landing.
- Fusion or fission reactors, most suited for much longer excursions, due to the higher acceleration to fuel volume ratio, over extended periods of time.
