The Trial of Asmodeus

After the Gods felt that Asmodeus had cheated them out of the souls that they were owed, they sent Zariel to petition Primus to oversee his trial, where he would answer for his actions. Primus agreed to this, and a date was set.   When the trial started, Primus allowed Asmodeus to defend himself, before the Gods described how he had wronged them. His defense was simple. The agreement was the Good souls went to The Heavenly Spheres, and Evil souls went to The Layers of Hell. Nothing in the agreement stopped either side from manipulating the nature of a soul, while it was living on the Material Plane. And, by tempting mortals with power, and corrupting their souls, he did not break any laws. He simply altered their fate.   Next, the Gods presented their case. And it was a long one. They spent years listing all the different mortals that Asmodeus had corrupted, and presented an inbalance in the universe that was created by him claiming more souls than he naturally should. So many people came to testify against him, and it seemed like it would never end. When it came to this, Primus claimed that he would allow only a few more testify, and then he would make his judgement. Zariel was near the end of the line, and this means she would not get a chance to testify. This angered her greatly, and so she began to push to the front of the line.   While she was shoving people, they began to grow angry with her, and eventually all of the forces of Good still in line to make a case, began to bicker, which escalated into a fight. Asmodeus sat in his chair and laughed to himself, knowing this would happen. When the fighting got out of hand, Primus put a stop to it, and commanded them to calm themselves. He would now make a judgement. Primus said that in the face of all the evidence, Asmodeus adhered strictly to The Pact Primeval. Nothing said proved that he broke the laws in the document.   As an act of peace, Primus bestowed upon Asmodeus his Ruby Rod. This Rod, while extremely powerful, also bound its owner to the rules of Law, and prevented them from breaking any law of the Universe, and this included The Pact Primeaval. The forces of Good were forced to accept this, although all it did was make Asmodeus more powerful, as its limitations were irrelevant, he had never broken the laws to begin with.
