Members of Kalan Council Raise Private Militaries

Political event

596 P.E.

The creation of private militaries by two of the Kalan council members.

The Kalan military was a respectable force after Ettermiddag. While it paled in comparison to that of the Saltkrigere or Eldur Knights in their heyday, the successful raising of funds thanks to the Renad-pai Relief Act and bargains with the eastern elves meant that it could grow large enough to deal with more than domestic conflict.   While the new military may have been a beacon of power, the crumbling unity within the Council of Kala was not. Each of the members was a descendant of Ineva Kataqr, but it seemed that blood did not run thick in the merchant city. The use of the military had to be agreed upon unanimously in its early years; however, that ended when the family could sparsely agree on what warranted military force. As a result, three of the 5 members always got their way, generally defaulting to using military force to recover debts or end civil disputes. Two of the members, Rass Nifi and Halm Afif, always voted against the use of force, hoping to move funding to a robust and unique legal system.   Nifi and Afif would take to private meetings, where they surrounded themselves with like-minded political minds for discussion. While the two siblings agreed that military force was unnecessary against its own citizens, they could determine no way of resolving the conflict without using force themselves. Ultimately, the siblings and their councils would determine that a private guard could be raised in order to confront the remaining members of the council. Before long, enough funds were raised that the organization was no longer a private guard, but a capable private military, the creation of which would set the stage for a civil war in the years to come.
