Neverwinter

Jewel of the East

A fairly young city, Neverwinter is the principal human settlement on the Eastern coast of the Sundered Sea. Initially the settlement developed at the natural fording point of the River Neverwinter, just before it reaches the sea. Many of the original settlement buildings can be found in the cities Old Quarter, nestled in the curve of the river. The growth of the city was originally limited by the proximity to the river. Due to the large delta of the Neverwinter, it was impractical to build docks adjacent to the settlement. After the construction of the Peres Dam and Aqueduct, the city was deliberately grown to the north, along the banks of a man made watercourse. The Neverwinter docks were built at the northern end of the city in a sheltered natural harbour. Neverwinter soon became a hub for shipping and commerce afterwards.

Demographics

The city is home to a fairly affluent population - predominantly human, but with other races scattered throughout. After the construction of the Peres Aqueduct, the city underwent a period of intense development and gentrification. The old poor quarter was submerged by the new waterway. Some of the displaced population moved into the new docks area, others set up a shanty town outside the north gate. Particularly well off merchants and officials built themselves sprawling estates near the Temple of the Five Gods in the Falls District.

Defences

The city is entirely enclosed by a massive marble wall. Five watchtowers are built into the wall at critical junctions, including the North and South Gates providing defences and barracks for the garrison. Neverwinter Keep is built into the eastern wall and provides a strong military staging point.

Industry & Trade

Neverwinter is predominantly an import/export hub. Each day boats come in and out of the docks, transporting local materials to the industrial powerhouse of Kaylest, and bringing back manufactured goods for sale.

Infrastructure

Upstream of the city lies the Peres Dam and Aqueduct. This substantive construction created the Peres Reservoir, which in turn is fed along the aqueduct into the city Falls District. The man made watercourse then runs through the city out to the sea. Along the banks of the canal is the Garden District

Guilds and Factions

Due to its proximity to the frontier, Neverwinter has a garrison of trained troops, under the banner of the Neverwinter Guard. They are responsible for both defence of the city, and maintaining order inside the walls.   Like most cities, particularly those with a substantial rich/poor divide like Neverwinter, a powerful Thieves Guild is based in the docks. This group operates smuggling rings, prostitution, waterfront gambling dens, and has recently started to operate a protection racket in the Merchant Quarter

Geography

The city is build in the bend of the Neverwinter River, at a natural fording point immediately before the Neverwinter Delta
