Thriving in the wetlands along the less-devastated portions of Lasair's eastern coast, lizardfolk have built many small communities in lands little desired by others. Living through hunting, trading, and a fiercely protective and proud nature, the lizardfolk stand as one of the more visible legacies of the
Dragons' presence in the world.
Basics
With an appearance that is extremely unsettling to many
Humans , lizardfolk are large reptilians, standing around five feet tall (not including tail length). Covered in thick scales and often featuring protruding spikes or flaring ridges, they are extremely tough beings well-suited to swamps and jungles. Their general appearance varies as greatly as does humans, with scale colors and patterns as diverse as skin and hair color. Their faces often give the impression of being expressionless, though this is more due to their tendency to communicate emotion through body language and movement rather than through facial movement.
Range
There are two major population centers for lizardfolk. The most prominent is along the southeastern edge of the continent, to the East of
Korth'an Forest. Several large villages stand within the wetlands along this coast, each with a thriving fishing culture. Lizardfolk from this region tend to have powerful tails which they use to swim, diving under the surface off the coast to harvest shellfish from farms they have created over centuries.
The other main population is centered along the edge of the
Nublar Jungle in the far North. The lizardfolk here are often much stronger than their cousins to the south, with an organized martial culture. Their organized use of weapons doesn't spring from warfare, however, but rather the need to survive with
Dinosaurs as neighbors. These lizardfolk both hunt smaller dinosaurs for food and supplies and fight to defend their villages from larger, more aggressive species.
Relations
Lizardfolk have varied relations with the other sentient species of Lasair. In general they are extremely protective of their territories, not brooking intruders of any kinds. They fiercely protect their fishing grounds in the south, for instance, considering their residence to indicate ownership. They will however happily trade resources that they harvest from those territories to meet other needs, as long as they feel they are receiving a fair deal (or something extra shiny).
The southern lizardfolk are proud members of the
Korth'an Conclave , actively trading with several member species and working with them to protect both their lands and those of their neighbors. They tend towards distrust towards other species from farther away, however, having had poor interactions with both
Humans and tribes of aquatic
Goblins .
The northern lizardfolk are more isolationist largely due to the lack of neighbors with any pleasant intent. The jungles are full of hostile and predatory beasts, and hostile
Elementals will occasionally range out of
the Firelands . As such they tend to be extremely cautious if not hostile towards any outsiders approaching their homes.
History
The lizardfolk are a fiercely prideful species, stemming primarily from their belief that they are descended from
Dragons - but also that they won their independence from their creators. While it impossible for anybody living today to be sure, this belief is actually true. The lizardfolk were created by dragons in the millennium before the
Dragonscourge as a subservient species. Created to exist largely as minions, the species developed intelligence and independence over time. When the dragons launched their war of extermination on humans and
Elves , many lizardfolk saw their moment and fled dragon-controlled lands rather than fight against fellow mortals. While thousands were slain by the side effects of the war, many more were enough to create what would eventually become a thriving and independent population along the coasts of the shattered continent.
Their connection to dragons exists past their appearance. While they are not an inherently magical species, they do carry some small bit of the magic that existed in their progenitors. This rarely manifests but when it does, the gifted individual finds themselves blessed with magical abilities that allow them to rise to leadership within their communities.
