Revenant are presumed to be created from someone who has a strong emotional tie to the realm of the living. It could be a strong will to fulfill an unfinished quest or mission. Whatever the reason it's their strong will that rises them from the grave, they may often forget the reason and keep lingering until death takes them again or they are reminded of what they came back to do.
