24 Flamerule, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)
Village of Oakhurst, Neverwinter Wood
The group returned to Oakhurst still reeling from the loss of Landen Downeye. Despite having known the human fighter for only a short time, it made his death at the claws of the troll no less devastating.
Edmont Patch, knowing he could not enter Oakhurst without being imprisoned again by the town’s constable, Felosial, remained outside of the village. Skyler agreed to keep a window to his room at the inn open so Edmont can enter later at night and get some rest.
The group rented rooms at the Ol’ Boar Inn and made preparations to return to the Sunless Citadel as soon as they could. While at the inn, Kerowyn Hucrele, matriarch of one of the village’s prominent families, met with Ziri and Skyler to discuss future plans to find her lost nephew and niece, Talgen Hucrele and Sharwyn Hucrele who joined two other adventurers on an ill-fated trek into the buried citadel.
During their meeting with Kerowyn, a goliath named Korg Sunfinder walked up to the group and introduced himself. He said he was visiting the shrine of Lathander in Oakhurst after his father, his tribe’s chieftain, received a vision of an impending doom that threatened the area. Korg offered to join the group, which Ziri was happy to accept. Ziri thought it would be better to continue looking for a fifth person to join the group since Brad Yorik lost interest in their quest. However, since Ziri wanted to return to the citadel first thing in the morning, finding another to join them before then may not be feasible.
In the morning, the group gathered together but not before finding out that the local general store owned by Kerowyn Hucrele had been robbed the night before. Ziri was going to ask Edmont if he knew anything about it, but the rogue had left before dawn and offered to meet them at the Old Road.
When the group met up with Edmont, Ziri asked Edmont if he knew anything about the burglary. Edmont said he didn’t and that he had been busy most of the night with a young maiden at a farm outside of Oakhurst. Around midnight he snuck into Oakhurst and made his way to the inn and into Skyler’s room.
Ziri wasn’t sure if Edmont was telling the truth or not but didn’t press the issue.
On the way back to the citadel, the group came across an overturned wagon laying on its side near the road. Hay was strewn everywhere.
Suddenly, four goblins farther down the road started shooting at the group with crossbows.
Ziri ordered the group to attack the goblins.
Skyler quickly made his way to the wagon to use it as a cover. But as he reached it, he realized that the hay covering the ground concealed a freshly dug pit! He thanked his deity, Bahamut, for keeping him safe and sought cover in the nearby trees instead.
The battle lasted less than a minute.
At the end, all goblins lay dead and the party had taken some minor injuries that required magical healing. After inspecting the fallen goblins for treasure or equipment they could use, the group suspected the goblins may have come from the citadel.
They then pressed on, arriving at the citadel before noon. Without running into any encounters along the way, the group made their way safely back to the citadel’s tower.
Ziri told Korg one of the two doors in the tower led to the deadly troll. They hadn’t ventured beyond the other door.
Korg asked if they wanted to face the troll once more. Ziri suggested waiting and that they should explore the rest of the citadel beyond the other door instead.
Everyone said a personal prayer to their respected deities as they readied themselves for what dangers lay ahead in the Sunless Citadel.
