Khelzarund, Triumph of Man over Dragon

The birth place of our righteous and beautiful Kheldori Empire and one of the most ancient cities still standing on the surface of bountiful and blessed Astraea - Khelzarund (translating from kheltar as, very literally, City of the King) stands eternal as a testament to man's perseverance and ingenuity in the face of the most primal of threats to our prehistoric survival - dragons.   Khelzarund is built in a spiral city plan ascending the exterior of a gargantuan active volcano - The Devil's Throat, formed from the beheaded body of Gholrigoth. The volcano itself rises from the depths of a massive saltwater lake, The Devil's Tears, shed in repentance for his defiance of the Nine, which occupies a large expanse in the center of Kheldor's borders. The Tears itself descends unspeakably far beneath Astraea's surface and into the fabled Underdeep, or more colloquially the Bowels of Gholrigoth.   Founded by Draecyris Hearthfang, First Khel and Slayer Princeps of the First Age, Khelzarund was initially built as a refuge from the draconic creatures that dominated prehistoric Kheldor; somewhere to forge weaponry and innovate, to refine the craft of killing man's would-be predators, and not only survive but aim to thrive from their slaughter.   Dragonslaying is sacred to the Kheldori, considered the ultimate expression of martial prowess. A mantra cited by Dragon Warriors dating back to the earliest days of recorded history is, "Vragor fen Naemit," or "The Strongest Should Triumph." Many a Kheldori native looking to improve their lot in life, to garner favor with nobility, to earn the respect of their ancestors, or even simply for the age-old glory of besting the Greatest Opponent have taken to Dragonslaying as a life-long profession.   Khelzarund itself (as of 2501 AR) is forged as much from dragons as it is stone or steel; the city streets are lined in mosaic tiles crafted from dragonscales, draconic bones are incorporated into the architecture and layout of the city itself (skulls forming the roofs of buildings, massive spinal columns with decoratively carved ribs towering into the sky forming neighborhoods and thoroughfares, etcetera).
