Breydon Canmore

Breydon Canmore

Breydon Canmore is a co-protaganist in the novel Green Thumb, Golden Tongue. He is a member of the Canmore family which owns and operates Two Sisters Vineyards.

Appearance

Breydon radiates positive energy from his lean, five foot, seven inch frame. There's usually a hint of a smile on his face, whether in an upward turn of the corner of his lips or a sparkle in his brown eyes. His dark hair, often longer than his family would like, is usually left unkempt except for the rarest of formal occasions. It's fairly common for him to have dirt on his hands, his clothes, and other places on his body. At the base of the thumb on his left hand is the traditional Cesnockwe tri-leaf tattoo signifying his connection with the energies of the greenery around him.

Mental

Breydon is known for being overly optimistic and generally good-natured, and he is able to carry on a conversation with just about anyone, sometimes doing too much of the talking himself. He lacks maturity and rarely takes anything seriously, which often leads him into mischief. The trouble he gets into is not malicious, as Breydon would never knowingly cause harm to someone else. Though he is completely at ease around others and thrives in social situations, he prefers the company of plants and can easily lose track of time when tending the family garden.   Breydon has a gambling addiction. Unfortunately, his golden tongue gives him an unfair advantage at skill based games because he can casually manipulate others that aren't aware of his ability. This is also how he's known to get himself into trouble, as he doesn't take much convincing to take bets on whether he can get away with something or not.

History

Charmed Life in the Vineyard

Breydon Canmore was born at Two Sisters in 1249 and is the youngest son of Sadie and Niall Canmore. He grew up on the estate with his brother and two cousins, learning together the ins and outs of the family business.   At the age of five Breydon manifested Power of Flora. Sadie was pleased by this development, glad to have two sons she could raise to take over the vineyard after her. Were that the only enmanity he manifested, he would likely have lived an unremarkable life as a trouble maker in a small town whose passion for tending to grapevines was unmatched.   Even as a young child, Breydon had been a bit of a chatter box and a bit of a trouble maker. He could talk off someone's ear and get away with just about anything. Sometimes he was so persuasive that he could even convince his parents to let him have one more serving of dessert. It wasn't until his final round of enmantic testing at age twelve the he demonstrated Power of Persuasion and it all became clear. He was so persuasive because he was Commanding and Influencing the people around him without realizing it, but his ability was so weak that no one did or believed anything out of character.   Prior to this revelation coming to light, Breydon had something of a record with local authorities. Nothing of significance, mostly harmless mischief, but being an imperant changed everything. Were he to get into trouble for even suspicion of using Persuasion, it would have to be reported to authorities in the highest court in the land, Central Court in Deamei, for appropriate monitoring. Breydon did his best to stay out of trouble, but sometimes he couldn't help himself. If he couldn't talk himself out of trouble, his parents (unbeknownst to him) paid off authorities in Vilgreen to make the reports vanish before they could make their way to Deamei.   When Breydon wasn't getting into trouble, he spent most of his time tending to the vineyard. He felt a strong connection to the vines that had been his family's livelihood for ten generations, just as his mother did. Unlike his brother, Jerome, Breydon had no desire to leave Two Sisters to pursue other endeavors, and were it not for Jerome's strong sense of duty keeping him tied to the family business, Breydon may well have been made Inheritor of the vineyard. But Breydon never resented Jerome for it--he was content to handle the grapes and leave the running of the business and the stress that came with it to Jerome.

Tragedy

Life seemed perfect for the Canmore family as Breydon reached adulthood, but tragedy would bring life to a grinding halt. In a tragic accident that claimed the lives of seven people, Breydon lost both of his parents and his uncle who also lived and worked at the vineyard. Jerome, who had been studying business at Ilium University in Deamei City, was forced to return home and assume his role as head of the vineyard far sooner than anyone had expected.   The family that called the vineyard home, now composed of Breydon, Jerome, their aunt Tamara, and cousins Mellie and Justyne, pulled together to support one another. A home that had been filled with happiness and regularly entertained guests was now quiet and shut off from the public it once welcomed.   With the death of their parents, Breydon and Jerome's relationship began to feel strain. Jerome, likely frustrated by his inability to follow his own dreams, began to pressure Breydon to get his life together and consider further education somewhere away from home. He also had to assume the role of Breydon's sponsor in their parents' absence, something they both resented.

Green Thumb, Golden Tongue

A summons arrives from Central Court for Breydon after an incident was reported that he had been a part of. Much to Jerome's chagrin, the two must travel Deamei City to confront the charges being levied against Breydon. Breydon's case is assigned to the Court of Reisouth, which immediately sends Jerome into a panic because of the High Inquisitor of Reisouth's advisor, a visaurant named Abbelithe Olevera who will know if Breydon tries to lie or use Persuasion to get himself out of trouble. She has a dangerous reputation, meaning she isn't someone to be trifled with.   The hearing turns out to be something of a trap--there hasn't been criminal proceedings involving an imperant in almost a decade, and the Court seems determined to make an example of Breydon by highlighting his delinquent behavior and demonizing him for his parents' bribes of officials in Vilgreen. After a series of heated exchanges, it is decided that Breydon will perform community service while the matter is properly investigated. He could return to Hessen and continue tutoring children at the local school as he already does, but he is instead offered a rare opportunity to submit for study of his aura.   Against Jerome's pleading, Breydon decides to submit himself for study by Abbelithe, if only for one session to satisfy his own curiosity about an enmanity he's never encountered before. Despite the unexpected reactions to her manipulation of his aura, he connects with her on a personal level and decides to stay in Deamei for his community service. To quell Jerome's displeasure, Breydon also begins attending Ilium University.   While in Deamei, Breydon accidentally crosses Casian Silva, a fellow twice-gifted student from a powerful family in Irocra who refuses to let Breydon's slight go. Meanwhile, Breydon continues getting to know Abbelithe, who also happens to be from a powerful Irocran family, and the two begin meeting up outside of their weekly aura study sessions and become friends.   That winter Breydon is walking Abbelithe home the night before he is to leave for Hessen when the two are attacked with snowballs by Casian and his loyal group of followers. What hurts more than the icy projectiles is Casian's verbal assault of Abbelithe who seems to shrink away from the attack, unable to defend herself. It angers Breydon to the point that he violates his probation by Commanding the lot of them to perform an obscene act upon themselves, knowing full well that the Command will be broken before they can perform the act but giving Breydon and Abbelithe enough time to get away.   Once the two are safely in Abbelithe's apartment, Abbelithe confides in Breydon the reason there are rumors of patricide surrounding her--there is truth to them, but she's not the cold blooded killer everyone assumes her to be. The two talk for a long time before Breydon leaves to pack for his early train to Hessen.   Breydon arrives home and is immediately dragged into the final preparations for his cousin Mellie's wedding. The event is a turning point for the Canmores, the first large-scale social event hosted at Two Sisters since the tragic accident two years ago, and the family meticulously sees to every detail so as to show their guests that Canmores are resilient. The ceremony itself is beautiful, but the festivities (which can sometimes last for days if enough wine is provided) are interrupted by the arrival of Deamei officers to arrest Breydon.   Now considered a threat because of his Commanding of Casian and his allies, Breydon is sent to jail, but not before physically assaulting Casian in the corridors of the Court of Reisouth after being verbally baited. Casian brings a civil suit against Breydon for pain and suffering following the assault, which Jerome is financially on the hook for as Breydon's sponsor. Without the liquid assets to pay, the vineyard will be forfeit to cover the damages.   Breydon remains in jail for weeks, gagged in a cell in the basement of the courthouse. By the time his trial arrives, his spirit is broken. He stands in court awaiting the beginning of his formal trial, knowing full well he'll be found guilty and that his family will lose their home because of his stupidity. But the trial never starts. It turns out he had been caught up in a conspiracy against Abbelithe and was merely considered collateral damage because of his feud with Casian. All charges related to the snowball incident are dropped and the civil suit is dismissed.   Breydon returns to Hessen, promising to never again set foot in the Court of Reisouth.
