Alar'itari

Lord of the Eternal Darkness

Praise be to the God of Gods, our most magnificent Lord of the Eternal Darkness. You have given the world all we see around us. Without you, we would not have your daughters and without them, there would be nothing. A fool is he would dare turn their back on you!
— Gairála Aeldeqár, a Laiqí in Ia Lithénil
Alar’itari, the Lord of the Eternal Darkness, was the first of the gods in the Pantheon of the Dawn. His mysterious and explosive death caused the creation of his two daughters, who would go on to create the heavens and the earth, Palális and Elíhilis. Even though he is dead, there are still some who send prayers to him, believing that some part of him lives on and that he influences or directly controls all his descendants. Cults dedicated to his worship are prevalent in northern Helendriel and deep inside the Vadéhnede forest.

Cult of the Eternal Darkness

Why bother wasting your devotion on the children when all we need is the father of all the gods?
— Gairála Aeldeqár, a Laiqí in Ia Lithénil
Most of those who follow the Pantheon of the Dawn have a strong respect for Alar’itari, but there are few who actively worship him. Most people find praying and sacrificing to a supposedly dead god to be a fruitless act, yet despite that, he does still have followers of his own. Often looked down on by the rest of society, these cultists dedicated to the Lord of the Eternal Darkness work to promote their values in secret.   His followers hold to the belief that a part of Alar’itari lives on in his descendants, guiding or perhaps even forcing the other gods to bend to his will. Because of this belief, many of his followers pay little attention to those they view as lesser gods, focusing all their efforts on appeasing the father of all the gods. Instead of praying to Áliahia for fertility or Gadirédin for good fortune, members of the cult pray to Alar’itari as he can thereafter command his children to do what he wills.   Such blatant disregard for the domains of the other gods has warranted accusations that the cult is, in essence, monotheistic. Some opponents of this monotheistic Alar’itari worship have called the cult a mockery of the faith, which has embraced ideas alien to genuine alcheni traditions. They argue that these misguided followers have been corrupted by mankind and their monotheistic Aprēan faith.

Lost Knowledge

The myths surrounding Alar’itari and his death developed from peoples’ previous knowledge of the creation of the universe, which pre-dated mankind’s arrival on Riel. Overtime, Alar’itari became the personification of the dark and vast emptiness of space.

Interesting that he is essentially a dead god, yet there are still people that worship him. I can see why that might be controversial.
