Act 1, Scene 5: The Imprint of the Skulks

By the time the lake has been crossed, the landscape has opened up into a full panorama, with the land rising slowly but steadily into the distance, trees and mushrooms sillouhetted against a dim gossamer sky.   More immediate though is the state of the mushroom forest on this side of the lake. It does not look good.   The living stuff is dying. If the smell of mold and decay isn't enough, the direct sight of giant, drooping aminita mushrooms, with black slime spreading over their stems and caps, says everything. The mushroom forest is dying a slow and ugly death.   There are tall spruce trees here as well--"shag spruce" they're called by the fey, like Dr. Seuss trees, limbs hanging down and drooping all about. Much of these trees is covered as well, as if by a slimy black mold. The stuff drips from the droops in places.   The sky is a swirling of vague purple light, sending the trees and the landscape into a deep sillouette, the dark outline of giant trees and giant mushrooms against the sky.   The undergrowth is wilted and wet with decay.   Overall the scene is bleak. Puddles of ick here and there just add to the bracken and black. The purple sky-light is just enough for you to see your way, perhaps 30' or so.   The blasted forest of trees and mushrooms recedes from the lakeshore back into the land. The smell of mildew-rot is cloying.   You recover from the sight enough to see there are distinct trails along the lakeshore to the right and left, and two more paths heading off into the forest. The ground is moist and spongy beneath your feet, and obvious footprints trace the way in every direction.   From out of the wilting slime, beneath the sillouette of the sick amanita forest, a mushroom person jerks and lurches his way toward you, wild beady eyes bulging. (This is Spotty the mushroom fungad... sick to dying. Has information about the skulks, mainly just that they are here, and they might be responsible for the ick. Firist he coughs up his deisease.)
