Half Elves

There are occasionally offspring of humans (of any kind) and elves (of any place or ancestry), to bring about the Half Elf. Although they are known for their loneliness and lack of "home," half elves are surprisingly well-accepted in their home environments.   There are exceptions to this rule, however. An elven people that mistrust an dislike humans would not immediately welcome (or keep) one of their own with human ancestry. Such a person would be ostracized, or even shunned, and expected to "move on" upon reaching adulthood. Alternatively, such a person and their family would be asked to leave society and go to human lands.   In any case, this shunning is rare, and usually half elves are brought up among the elves and accepted for who they are. They become adept at many elven skills and knowledge and poetry and song. There are Elven locations where Half-Elves are more common, such as the Greyleaf Forest and the Lacq Forest. These forests are nearer to large human cities (Tellarus and Teharre, respectively), and elves visit both frequently, and the elves of the Lacq mingle with the Narran people often. (In fact, the Narrans see half-elves as noble and valuable--cultural relics or even heroes.)   Thus Half-Elves can grow up in a wide variety of locations and situations. they may be forlorn and rejected wanderers, or well-respected members of society. They may be adept at magic as their elven ancestors, or flexible and adaptive like humans, or both! So much of the half-elven character depends on who brought them up, their home base so to speak.
Regardless however, they retain traits of both human and elf, and the mixture is potent and rich with possibilities. Below are links to both humans and elves in general. Again, a half-elf is usually brought up in elven lands, with an elven mother and possibly, if they stay, a human father. Human mothers are more rare, and even then the couple will mostly likely stay in Elven lands.   There are always exceptions!   Here are links to both Elven and Human cultures and environments: The Elves, General Humans: Overview   One might imagine many possibilities!     APPEARANCE Half elves can often pass for Elves, for they tend toward a slender build, and their ears end in points.  The presence of facial hair on birth-assigned males, and a slightly squarer jaw on both birth-assigned females and females, can give the half elf away.  Certainly, anyone not familiar with full-blooded elves will see half-elves as Elven, unless their ears are covered.  In this case, the Half Elf can pass well for a human.

Culture

Common Myths and Legends

With their wide perspective and often inter-cultural experience, Half Elves are slightly less likely to take up religion, or buy in to mythology in any way.  Certainly all the deities and modes of worship are open to them, especially those found in their home culture, but such adherence is fairly rare.  On the other hand, half elves love a good story or two, and listening to myth-stories is n point of enjoyment and entertainment.  Some Half Elves become excellent musicians, poets, or storytellers, picking up the bardic tradition from their home culture.
HISTORY
Half Elves are honored especially by historians and scholars of Elven history, for they are believed to be the most direct descendants of the "proto-elves," a race that combined both Elven and Human traits.  They say that all humans and elves combined into one race, one that split apart thousands of years ago, the create the two separate races.  In fact, Half Elves often turn to scholarship and the study of history, or adventurers seeking this information, because the story fascinates them, calls to them: a cultural origin from the most distant of pasts.
