Crimson Masters

Kingpin of the Redbands Sindehjigaierhafgowehr

An efreeti with a thirst for power and a lot of money to throw around, Crimson Masters has made a name for himself in the City of Antiquity as an almost laughably openly corrupt philanthropist investing in the community of Bog Bottom. He's bought and paid for all of the real estate in the neighborhood and even funded their upkeep - but he's also accused of unifying young gangs under his red banner and encouraging them to run wild citywide. He's used his burgeoning political influence to convince the Landlords, and the Councilor, of Bog Bottom's value to Sable as pieces of antiquity - should the people vote for such a measure, and managed to get that vote to go in his direction.   Crimson Masters appears primed to win the special election over landlordship of Bog Bottom and become a city official. What his intentions are beyond that are anybody's guess.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

A hulking genie of the Elemental Plane of Fire, Crimson is a master of flame, immune to fire and able to create it on a whim. Fine silk shirts and damask suit jackets drape his magma-red skin, and he bedecks himself in brass and gold torcs, chains, and rings, all glittering with jewels. When he flies, the efreeti's lower body transforms into a column of smoke and embers.

Facial Features

A big cigar in his mouth under his bigger mustache

Special abilities

Elemental Demise. If an efreeti dies, his body disintegrates in a flash of fire and puff of smoke, leaving behind only the equipment he was wearing or carrying.   Hurl Flame. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (5d6) fire damage.

Specialized Equipment

Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location. Uncommon Magic item. While wearing this amulet, Crimson Masters is hidden from divination magic. He can't be targeted by such magic or perceived through magical scrying sensors.   Ring of Obscuring. Uncommon Magic Item. This band of iron resembles a skull and is cold to the touch. As an action while wearing the ring, Crimson Masters can expend a charge to cast fog cloud centered on him for one minute.   Scimitar of Warning. Uncommon Magic Item. This magic weapon warns Crimson Masters of danger. While the weapon is on his person, he has advantage on initiative rolls. In addition, he and any of his companions within 30 feet can’t be surprised, except when incapacitated by something other than nonmagical sleep. The weapon magically awakens him and his companions within range if any of them are sleeping naturally when combat begins.

Personal history

The City of Brass, capital city of the plane of fire, was able to keep the heat back enough for extraplanar beings like humans, elves, and dwarves to safely exist within the walls. Through their slave labor the sultan built a great empire where every efreeti could live like a king with their service. Crimson's kindlings gave him his true name, one of lineage and power, Sindehjigaierhafgowehr. Sinder for short. Sinder felt uneasy about slavery, surely every animal deserved to be free and happy.   Sinder decided to leave the city of brass and create his own farm, a place where he could hold back the heat and keep the extraplanar beings safe. He worked with an underground network to bring their kind to his care. He fed them, housed them, made sure they never left, and he cared for them until their dying days. Sinder felt content that he was a better efreeti than most.   Then the horizon walkers came. Extraplanars in strange garb with the nerve to tell Sinder they were patroling his land. They called him a slaver. They attacked him. He punished the impudent welps but they broke his protective field -- burned down his whole farm -- and killed most of his extraplanars. They were the lucky ones, those he saved were left with horrible burns. They didn't last much longer.   Sindehjigaierhafgowehr returned to the City of Brass and apologized to the Sultan, he always did know better, animals needed a strong hand to tame them. The Sultan put him in charge of wiping out the insurgent horizon walkers. Sinder learned much by hunting predators, he learned of the material plane called Loom, he learned the names and innate magical traits of the Loomish races, and he learned of their base -- The Weeping Colossus.   A rock formation in the shape of a giant, arms outstretched, with lava flowing from its eyes into the fire sea, Sinder admired the taste in location. His strike force attacked the weeping colossus and the horizon walkers called in every ranger at their command. How could the efreeti lose with their superior magic? But Sinder could feel something was wrong in the heatwaves. Something caused by neither them nor the horizon walkers. Sinder opened his eyes to the weave, where even from this great distance he could see the weave converge into the crimson wastes -- where they'll meet in the gyrosphere around which efreeti are born. At that point -- the weave snapped -- and all magic stopped. Or at least all active magic, all magic casting, stopped. Magic items, those protecting the rangers, those in their weapons, still worked. The tide turned. Sinder lost many of his kindlings. A water genasi ranger brought him to his knees. Then the weave reformed -- without the convergence point.   Sinder thought it mattered little, he was still able to fall back -- he could still summon Imix the elder fire elemental to burn them all. Both his men and theirs, though some he assumed could have escaped out of the plane. He returned to the City of Brass, sure they would need him if their fire shields went down, but instead he found the chaos never came. Their walls stood strong. The Sultan was not only shocked by Sinder's account, he was horrified by the consequences. He commanded Sinder to travel into the wastes and fix the convergence point himself, on foot, as penance.   Sinder eventually left the Crimson Wastes for Loom. He became one of the great tyrant slavers of the world. He felt content looking out for number one -- until the devils attacked. It wasn't that he could not fight them, it was that they convinced his slaves to wish terrible things on him in return for their immortal souls. Animals. Sinder barely escaped back to the plane of fire with his life. Yet again he had lost it all, and he wondered if that was what it was to be immortal. But... the Sultan's empire still stood! He had always been right, and Sinder should have always returned to him. However before Sinder could make his way back to the sultan's tower, a dragon flew overhead and a group of Loomish invaders murdered the sultan, immediately installed one of their own as the new sultan, and left.   They called it the Mirari Dynasty, that he was a genasi, a half-efreeti, before he was a tiefling. That mattered little to Sinder, who saw each and every tiefling as the lowest of the low. Yet the world changed around him no matter what he did. Mirari freed the slaves, and most of the efreeti agreed to it. What happened to all the strong and noble kinglings he used to know? It happened slowly, but surely, Sindehjigaierhafgowehr lost it all. A formation of new empires were formed in the material plane owned by dragons. The Mirari Dynasty happily traded with them. Sinder watched his culture die, replaced by foreign elements. He decided he would spend the rest of his days being their problem.   Until he finally met the flame dragon. Smolder felt like a kindred spirit, one who left the material plane because he was tired of being told what to do by his elder dragons. Though he agreed that nobody could tell Sinder he was not allowed to own slaves, he also didn't agree with slavery overall. Sinder didn't understand, but Smolder explained that if Sinder couldn't convince anybody to willingly enslave themselves to him then he really wasn't a great slaver after all. Sinder really respected the hell out of that dragon but was too proud to ask if they could ever go through dragonbirth. Little did he know Smolder only wanted him to ask.   Sinder started over, again, he took on the name of his place of birth as Crimson Masters entered the new world. He brought with him great wealth from his many lifetimes and made Antiquity his home since. they respected old money so much there. It certainly wasn't the climate, though he figured heat was a service people would pay for. Crimson saw Bog Bottom was plenty vulnerable for gentrification, so he offered to buy up the land to improve it for the local community. When they said no, he destroyed their community center and started driving up crime to convince people to sell to him -- for less, of course, they should have taken the first deal.

Education

Without a formal education, you couldn't even say Crimson Masters was raised by the streets - he's older than any streets in the new world. In fact, he derides scholars and intellectuals, presuming they think they're better than him. His experiences have formed the greatest education he'll ever need.

Employment

Publically, Crimson Masters got his start establishing the City of Indulgence where he made his fortune owning a hotel and investing in business real estate. He made a move to Valor, attempting to build more of a global brand with a casino, but that project was never completed he moved to Antiquity with a new philanthropic bend toward building up the struggling community in the Bog Bottom neighborhood.   Nobody really believes that. Accusations, rumors, and a general vibe of malice have followed Crimson throughout his public life. Local violent crime always upticks in areas he moves to, often targeting his business opponents. It's openly alledged he's a crime lord but never proven in any official capacity.

Morality & Philosophy

Crimson Masters lives his life by the challenge given to him by the Flame Dragon; a truly great slaver could convince people they want to be his slaves. He enjoys empowering the weak and vulnerable to do his bidding and then wielding them like an army against his enemies until they too submit to his rule.   He's always ready to start over somewhere new, once he's cut all of his loose ends, never allowing himself to feel a genuine connection to places or people. Never again.

The Convergence Point

When an efreeti is first born in the crimson wastes of the plane of fire, they do not yet know how to filter the magic weave out of their sight. Crimson Masters arrived in the form of a young man and followed all the threads of the weave to the point where they intersected -- in an ever-spinning gyrosphere. Crimson could hear his sultan speaking through it, welcoming him to his new plane, calling him a king, and offering immediate passage back to the City of Brass.   After the point of convergence was cut, Crimson was sent to discover what had happened. He spent many months lost in the wastes, perhaps even years, before he found the place of his birth. He had had more than one deep emotional dark night of the soul. What had he done, what was his purpose now, and how could he make it up to the sultan? He discovered the gyrosphere over its pedestal, destroyed. A burning body nearby seized to life, immediately in its death throws. Sinder put the fire at bay and asked the revenant what had happened. He said he had to close a dangerous portal to stop an attack on Loom. He didn't know that without the convergence point, elementals could not evolve into efreeti. Sinder let him burn. For all he cared the whole material plane could burn.
