Jorwith's Last Request Report

General Summary

The Freshmen rush out of the tavern, looking left and right as the zombies close in. Now is the time to act to defend the defenseless townfolk.   Mola goes first, casting a ray of frost that flies right past a zombie's head and scatters on the dirt road, turning it to a frosty, frozen patch. He then tries again, summoning a large spectral version of Kash's school seal that he smashes down upon the same zombie, causing it to stagger sideways (spiritual weapon).   Jorwith Falas reacts instantly, his instincts as a leader kicking in.   "Quickly!" He yells to Rahvin. "These people need our help!"   His words seem to bolster Rahvin, and the cleric watches as Jorwith slices into one zombie, then the next, using both his longsword and trident to great efficiency.   Zela goes next, unleashing her small white dragon wings to fly up and over Jorwith's head. She sends up Ommi, who begins to spit dragonbreath upon a zombie, splattering upon its rotten skull.   Indra is close behind, swinging xir staff into one of the creatures, but it lurches to the side and xir attack misses.   Rahvin shakes his head, irritated with Jorwith's short, barking orders, and leans out the window of the tavern to get within sight of three zombies, quickly approaching a terrified villager. He takes out his holy symbol, presenting it to the undead.   "Leave this house!" His voice echoes, as a golden ripple emanates from the emblem (turn undead). Unfortunately, these undead are tethered by something more powerful than a command from a cleric could shatter, and their eyes glow with an unearthly blue. The eyes on the corpse of Devona glow as if in response to this, but Rahvin is too far away to notice. He outstretches his hand, fingers curled as if petting some small furry creature, and a spectral cat leaps forward (spiritual weapon).   "Quincy. Get them." Rahvin growls. The cat leaps forward, and begins to bite into the neck of one of the undead. It severs what little tissue still connected the neck and body, and the head tips forward, rolling away.   Alynn fumbles nervously with their pack as they order Patent to help the others. They stand right next to the body of Devona in the town square, and they, at least, have noticed the blue light coming from the vacant eyes. As the automaton lumbers off to assist, Alynn leans down and drives a dagger deep into the heart of the evil mage.   Unfortunately, as Alynn does so, Devona's lungs fill and the wizard lets out a bonechilling gasp. Before Alynn can back away, Devona looks at them with eerie blue eyes, and reaches up one withered hand to Alynn's cheek. The veins on the artificer's face turn black, and they gasp as they feel their very life essence being sapped away (vampiric touch). With each moment that Devona keeps contact with Alynn, the sunken dead flesh begins to fill out and the skin regains its color - though the undead wizard is still certainly undead.   Kash dashes out of the tavern, and sees the situation in front of him. He knows immediately that he can't make it to anyone to assist but Indra, and posts up right next to xim to try and destroy the same cluster that the shaman is attempting to dispatch.   The zombies attack as one, and the hapless villagers are decimated. Before the adventurers can react, five are dragged down and torn apart by the jaws of these creatures. Patent looks down without expression as two claw at his plating, and doesn't move even as one manages to pry up the chest plate slightly (critical hit). Jorwith and Kash are light on their feet, both dodging the open jaws of the zombies. In a panic, the few villagers still left abandon all pretense of bravery and run, and two more are caught by the zombies before they can flee far, also being torn apart. The others, however, skitter into the buildings and bar the doors, safe from the undead hordes.   Mola conjures a firebolt and tosses it at the zombie nearest Jorwith, scorching and burning its rotting flesh with a horrendous stench. He also swings around the spiritual weapon, crushing it down upon the zombie with a wet splat.   Jorwith, with no more enemies to fight, runs over to the center of the town square, stepping between Devona and Alynn to attempt to protect the newcomer.   Zela's form suddenly dissipates, coalescing again over a canopy next to the gallows. She commands Ommi to continue attacking, which the little dragon does: using its dragonbreath to spray a group of three zombies feasting on a villager. Two are hit right with his attack, while the last is just slightly out of his range. Zela flutters up, higher and higher until she hovers fifty feet above Devona.   Indra looks to Kash standing next xim, and pulls free a small wooden amulet. Xe throws it out near another cluster of zombies, where it sinks into the earth like pudding before erupting back out - the form is that of a frog totem, and Indra encourages Kash to take advantage of it.   As Kash prepares to rush in, Rahvin also casts out a hand, calling on his divine connection to Anwyn to bring down holy fire upon one of the undead (sacred flame). The zombie is unable to withstand the divine energy and collapses, burning, as the spectral cat Quincy pounces onto another zombie's back and takes it down, ripping and tearing at its flesh.   Alynn pulls themselves free and stumbles back, behind Jorwith. They fumble for a red potion at their side, tossing the cork and downing it quickly. Protective energy swirls around them as they attempt to settle their nerves and steel themselves for the next attack(sanctuary).   Devona slowly gets up to his feet, towering over Alynn and nearly even with the stalwart Jorwith. He takes a few steps back, giving Jorwith an opportunity to jab his sword in and catch a bit of Devona's cloak, tearing it and the flesh underneath, which begins to drip a grim, deoxygenated blood down his shoulder. Devona winces and growls, bringing up both his arms, within which a blizzard begins to form, swirling faster and faster. By the time he releases it, the force is so great it knocks Alynn backwards into a small stone wall. The artificer's head hits the stonework with a crack and they fall limp, unconscious on the ground. Jorwith lowers his arms, crusted with frost and with burning eyes framed with eyebrows, beard and hair stiffened with ice.   Kash sees his friend fall and cries out, changing course and running straight for Devona. He leaps forward, swinging his sword right at Devona's neck, but an arcane barrier deflects the fighter's blow.   Devona's hand raises up, and all the zombies pause in their slaughter, hearing the voice of their father. Slowly, they get up and begin to shamble towards the gallows. Patent and Indra, in the way of the mob, are subsumed by it, both getting a pound of flesh taken as they try to protect themselves.   Mola withdraws his spiritual weapon - too far away to hit Devona or the zombies - but moves it as close as he can, then outstretches a hand to the wizard. It's an attempt to enchant the wizard, to charm him, and against all odds, it works. Devona hears the arcane magic calling, and turns to look at Mola, captivated.   Jorwith takes the moment he has to yell out a battlecry, and his voice jolts Alynn back to consciousness. The surge of camaraderie and heroism bolsters Zela and Kash as well - even more so when both his strikes with his sword and trident score and tear into Devona's back.   Zela flies even further up into the sky. She opens her mouth and breathes out a slight huff of multicolored fog, which coalesces into a wall of fire down by where the zombies have gathered to enter from the outer courtyard to the inner courtyard, where the gallows and their master stand (silent image). It is enough to fool such dumb creatures, and they mingle uncertainly by the opening, not sure where to go but through the deadly doorway. Ommi, too far away to make it to the group by the illusion, darts off towards another cluster.   Indra, left by xirself, grabs a handful of earth, lifting it up towards the sky as xe chant, then slams their fistful of earth back down into the road. The ground begins to shake, and a split in the land unsteadies two of the horde - one is swallowed up entirely by the erupting earth.   Rahvin sees that Indra is still alone, with a singular zombie left to menace xim. He reaches out again with a sacred flame and kills the last one, while Quincy bounds forward and tackles Devona - not taking him down, but scratching him up badly.   Alynn, still groggy and disoriented, sees that Kash is the only person they know facing Devona head on. They cast heroism on their friend, and, voice cracking, screams at Patent to keep killing zombies. Patent complies, one of his silvery arms clocking a zombie on the side of the head.   Devona reaches out and grabs Jorwith by the throat. As the Freshmen watch, a dark energy - much like the one that had struck Alynn - begins to spread from Devona to the town hero. Only this one is not siphoning life. Instead it is poisoning his veins, adding taint to his body, and Jorwith collapses to the ground, unconscious or dead. Devona looks to the party. Calm and collected, he offers to let them live if they lay down their weapons. Zela nervously offers money, but Alynn and Kash share a look. There is no way they are allowing such a monster to live.   Kash springs forward with surprising speed, blade burying itself in Devona's chest. As he does so, the blade itself sparks and whirls with violet energy. Devona, partially in surprise from being hit, and partially in genuine wonder, asks Kash, "what are you?"   As this happens, Zela snaps and begins to flee, terrified of what fate lies in wait if the party fails to stop the necromancer.   The zombies, feeling their master's distress, begin to filter around the sides of the courtyard to another entrance. Patent, despite the claws scraping at his body, does not take any damage, thankfully.   Mola shoots out another firebolt and immolates a zombie, while Omi takes the opportunity to spit more dragonsbreath. Zela, panicking that Jorwith may have died, flies closer to the ground while she calls Ommi back to her.   Indra, unfortunately, has found ximselves alone once again with four zombies surrounding xim. Xe reaches out xir hand, and a ring of ghostly frogs begin to hop in a ring about xim, hopefully protecting xim from the incoming undead (spirit guardians).   Rahvin runs closer to the necromancer, casting out a guiding bolt as Quincy scrambles up his chest before kicking off Rahvin's clavicle, turning in the air with claws out to try and hit Devona, but neither attack hits. The guiding bolt sparks against the broken stonework and Quincy lands on top of it almst immediately afterwards. Alynn takes the opportunity to run over to Kash and offer a similar bottle of red to their friend. Kash accepts, and the effects of sanctuary wash over them. Alynn looks down to their waist and realizes there is a potion there that they have never used before and have no idea what it does. Deciding "fuck it," Alynn downs the potion. Almost immediately, their skin begins to toughen, darken, and crack, growing to resemble barkskin.   Devona, having had enough of this nonsense, throws out another cone of cold that hits Alynn, Kash and Indra. Indra and Alynn are ill prepared and take the full force of the blast, while Kash manages to protect his face in time. He is additionally lucky for having a moment to throw out... something to block the worst from hitting Alynn. A shuddering, phantasmal shield of prismatic tones that shields Alynn from the worst of it. As Kash releases his mental grip on the shield, Alynn's ghost white face is all the confirmation he needs to know that if he hadn't acted, Alynn would have been killed. Devona takes in this all, and notes out loud that Kash is quite the interesting specimen.   Kash nearly passes out from the strain of the shield he conjured, knees cracking painfully on the icy, snowy, stone ground. As Devona steps closer - perhaps to add another body to his collection - Kash summons all his inner strength and swings his sword, cutting Devona across the thigh as a psychic lash whips out from him to attack the wizard's mind.   The zombies shuffle closer, and begin to claw at the kalashtar: one glances off his shoulder, taking some skin with it. The other, however, bites into Kash's neck, making him scream in pain as it begins to try and drag him to the ground with nothing but the strength of its jaw. The ones gathered around Indra stumble towards xim, but as they step through the ring of frogs they begin to burst apart. One of the zombies does manage to get a hit in on Indra before it dies, but it is a graze more than anything else. Patent stands stoically and watches the undead clawing at him with nothing short of impassivity. They do absolutely no damage to his plating whatsoever.   Zela, having gotten back in control of herself, sheepishly returns. She pulls together a crackling blast of multicolored energy and fires it at Devona, striking him in the back, leaving a smoking crater (eldritch blast; critical hit). Devona stumbles forward, right into Ommi's dragonsbreath.   Rahvin presses his amulet to his lips and says a short prayer. Anwyn's soft touch responds, caressing his face as she bestows health and good will to his companions: Kash, Alynn, and Ommi. As he does so, Quincy attacks Devona's feet, mauling his legs.   The warmth of the Gnomish One surrounds Alynn, bringing them back from the brink. They slowly come to consciousness, but as soon as their vision stops spinning, the artificer gets up and runs, dodging a zombie as they attempt to put as much distance between them and the necromancer as possible.   Still face to face with Kash, Devona reaches out.   "You'd be an excellent addition to my wall," he murmurs, and the same vampiric tendrils that dragged the life from Alynn reach out for Kash. But the fighter bats his hand aside and without more than a grim smile in response, skewers Devona all the way through! Blackish blood spills down the wizard's face as he slowly becomes still. For real this time. Kash puts his foot on the body and pushes it backwards, off his sword which he wipes on his shirt.   The few remaining zombies collapse, and the Freshmen watch as the zombies - and Devona - begin to rapidly rot away until there's nothing but bones and dust left.   Zela rushes forward and tackles Kash to the ground in a hug, while Rahvin gathers Alynn and Kash close to him so he may heal them. He then turns his attention to Jorwith, dead on the ground. But Rahvin is not so easily deterred. He reaches out to his bride, the goddess of the hearth, and prays. Then he gets to work. He begins to try resuscitation, and after ten minutes of futile efforts, Jorwith takes in a hacking breath of air, coughing out disease and sickness as he returns from the veil. As he recovers, Zela begins to strip Devona's dust pile. After she gathers all his belonging in a separate pile, she uses her dragon claw necklace to burn the body, ensuring that Devona will never return.
