Falas

Falas is a port village in Adura, only home to a handful of citizens but a stop for many traveling from Port of Saphir to Northland or Galway.   It is a somewhat dreary town that has recently been brought to higher spirits by the death of the local wizard, who was holding the entire town hostage.

Different Areas of Falas

Ripple Row
Fishing, crabbing, and all manner of meats can be found in Ripple Row, as well as any materials normally made with animal products. It stinks to high heaven, but you can normally find the best (and worst) of nets, pelts, leather, meat and tools (made of bone, obviously) in Ripple Row.   Jacobs Square
Named for the Jacobs family, an extinct human line that built and cultivated the community garden in the center to help combat the scurvy and other diseases the sailors contracted out at sea, Jacobs Square is the 'village square', though it is not technically in the exact center of the city, but more to the southern edge. A hub of activity and warmth, Jacobs Square is where you can purchase clothing, dry goods, fruits and vegetables, and find places to stay that are a bit nicer than the harbor inns.   Ivy Hook
It is strange for ivy to grow in such sea-spoilt ground, but the hollow of Ivy Hook is defiant of the oddities in its existence. Ivy Hook is much cooler - calmer - than the sea of the rest of the town. A chilled mist seems to cling to the ground and around every ancient stone. Ivy Hook is where many of the retired merchants build their mansions and the priests build their temples, though Falas is only big enough to support a few deities.   Whitebeam Harbor
To call Whitebeam a harbor is more an inside joke than anything else. About three miles from Falas is a ghost town made of the same white trees and bent, flowing limbs as Paramenthia and Clarathos. This is Whitebeam Harbor, a precursor to the village of Falas. Amerys was already running the trading post at the time that Whitebeam was under construction, but Nicholas Rex, king of Adura at the time of its construction, believed that there was a need to put a better face on their main export hub on the coastline and began the construction of Whitebeam.   The entire project was a failure, and the town was abandoned soon after, the residents resettling in Falas. Nicholas gave up on Whitebeam, and so the empty, pale buildings sit still, visible from Falas' harbor.

History

Falas is named after Amerys Falas, a port-keeper in the olden times. She was well respected by the various merchants who would come from Aduran cities further in-land, as well as the ship captains who would stop to purchase or trade goods with the merchants. Amerys was fair, stern, and tolerated no tom foolery or cheating at her post.   As time went on, various craftsmen began to build their shops near the port to take greater advantage of the export business growing around Falas' estate and from their presence, farmers and fishers and ranchers began to congregate as well. Because of Adura's positioning, the village of Falas has been crippled when it comes to growth - but it remains a port that many stop at before continuing along the coastline.   Two years ago, the human wizard Devona took up residence in the village and turned it into his personal playground. Sailors and merchants would 'disappear' while in Falas, becoming his newest subjects for experimentation with life and death, and Devona worked his magic to cut off communication from the outside world.   Letters would be opened rewritten, only speaking of the beauty of the waves rather than begging for help. Speech would become impossible, the speaker finding themselves tongue-tied before they could breathe a word of their predicament to outsiders.   Finally, Jorwith Falas, great great grandson of Amerys, took up arms against the wizard and slew him. Jorwith is a local hero, and the body of Devona is hung, burned by the vengeful townsfolk, in the town square. The body refuses to rot or decay - most believe that he experimented on himself and that the left over magic is preserving his body.
