Tragedy in the Ivory City Report

General Summary

As Mola Aubert sees the infinity of the universe, he inevitably collapses. The fact that there is light pouring from his eyes like he’s some sort of minor deity is enough to get everyone’s attention – and they rush over to him.

When he finally awakes, Kashmeel Mazigh asks him worriedly what happened, and Mola responds, “I saw everything.”   And indeed he had, but it is too much for a human brain to handle. That does not mean it did not touch his mind in an irrevocable way: Mola, as he looks about, he can see the chemical make up of everything in the forge. Every person, every object, even the very air – all of it, he knows the percentages and materials that make it up.   Zela the Liar, awestruck, asks, “Are you a prophet?”   She begins to search his body, and disappointingly notes that he isn’t glowing anymore. Rahvin Ashdust pushes Zela back, forcing her to give the young tiefling some room.   Though that doesn’t stop the kobold – she reaches out to touch his forehead and asks seriously, “Are you experiencing things in there?” The effect is somewhat ruined by her eyes crossing as she says it, but Mola barely has time to process her statement before she has already moved on to wondering out loud if he was a dragonborn, not knowing what a tiefling is and only recognizing his horns as signs of draconic ancestry.   Mola, with his newfound knowledge, stands unsteadily. Taking some of the metal in Alynn Agethe's forge, he sets out to make himself a shield. Unfortunately, knowledge of components does not equal skill or technique, and he succeeds in making nothing but a lump of metal.   They wonder if Mola has magic now, and Rahvin tries to avoid mentioning that his magic comes from fucking. But even as he remembers back to the porn worthy encounters with his godly wife, Rahvin has no idea how or why Mola got the abilities he did.   As it’s getting late, the crew decide to pack up and put Mola’s predicament aside for now. They still have the necklace mystery to uncover, and Bruxin Calloway Deadremen Limpton III , the owner of the fourth chain, is still around somewhere.   They set off to try and find the yuan-ti, who is in the process of stealing from a small boutique on the Painted Steps . He manages to steal a very nice looking hair pin, using both his sticky fingers and penchant for the dramatics to distract the shop keep.   As the party continue to look for Bruxin, Zela picks up Ommi and spins around, holding him in front of her as she spins around four to five times, then takes off running in a random direction. The others follow behind bemusedly, but it becomes clear that while Zela’s directions may not be the best, Ommi is at least helpful – Zela squeezes the poor pseudodragon intermittently, making him squawk and using this as a “squawk alarm,” warning pedestrians out of their way.   As they move through the city, Zela suggests that maybe Mola could be magic now, like her. When asked to clarify, she says that she can cast magic through Ommi, and offers to let Mola try. Mola gingerly takes the pseudodragon and stares deeply into his eyes, but something goes terribly awry, and Mola's hands erupt in flames - an accidental burning hands, dealing 5 points of fire damage to everyone in his vicinity.   Zela quickly takes back her pet.   "You're not getting magic from Ommi, or from a book! You're getting it from you!" Zela exclaims excitedly. "Or you stole it..."   She offers to teach Mola what she knows, for a price, and Mola wrongly assumes that Zela wants a date. Disgustedly, Zela clarifies that she will help for food. She also points out that perhaps Alynn could help Mola. Thinking over her own magic, Zela asks Ommi what her dragon master's name is, but Ommi says that Zela made him promise to keep it a secret, though Zela doesn't remember doing this.   Eventually they do spot the wandering fashionista, and meet up with him. After brief introductions, Bruxin is offered dinner at Newler's home, and agrees to go with them. Kash says he has to go home for dinner himself, and Zela (ever the opportunist) puts on her best lip wobble and puppy eyes, and Kash eventually allows her to come with him for dinner at his uncle's place.   Entering into the house, Uncle Justus sits down Kash and asks him where he got the necklace, rather gravely. Kash repeats the story of the mysterious figure teleporting the object into his pocket, but Justus doesn't seem to believe Kash. He explains that the jeweler he took it to said that the necklace was quite powerful and valuable, and that he thinks that Kash should turn it into the guards first thing in the morning, because it will certainly bring more trouble than it's worth. Kash agrees, and they go back inside to have dinner together.   Zela is unremarked upon by the Gladwells, who share dinner with her and bring blankets and pillows to Kash's room for her to build a nest. They both settle down eventually, though Kash at some point during the night wakes and notices that Zela is not sleeping well - a nightmare, perhaps. As he reaches to help her, he notices two masses growing on her back. When he comments on them, Zela freaks out and rushes to the bathroom to lock herself in. Kash, worried for his new friend, follows, but Zela dives out the window on her two white wings, meaning to make for the forest.   However, as she emerges, she looks down to the master bedroom on the first floor and notices that the window is open and she can see Justus Gladwell.... dead, with his throat slashed open and figures moving about in the dark.   Panicking even more now, Zela sends Ommi ahead of her as she flies back in through the window. Ommi barrels out of the room and begins to attack Kash, doing the best he can to alert the young man of the danger. Zela isn't much better, too hysterical to get much out. But eventually Kash understands that there are intruders in the house, and he orders Zela to find Rahvin while he goes back into his room to put on his armor.   Zela does so, and Kash rapidly begins to don his armor before starting to make his way downstairs as quietly as he can. The first of the intruders he comes upon is wearing a blue cloak and mask molded to look like a dragon. All it takes is one sudden blow to the back of the head to drop that assassin, but the sound draws the attention of the other invaders - one of which is a man with half-scaled skin, claws, and glowing yellow eyes. This last one takes the lead, stalking up the stairs towards Kash.   Zela, meanwhile, has flown as fast as she can to Dreyfuss's home, waking Rahvin and the others. Rahvin, in the middle of a date by the lake with his wife Anwyn, takes a few moments to come to his senses. But when he does, he leaps into action, bringing with him the others that had taken up Newler's offer of hospitality.   Kash leaps forward striking down upon the draconic general with mighty blows, but his strikes only draw the barest of blood. The man looks down at himself, where the blood pools, and grins, swiping his hand across it and tasting it.   "The little pup wants to play." He laughs, and swings his own sword around towards Kash. His mighty blows do not often hit, but they stagger and tire the young fighter. It does not help that the general's men have noticed the combat and have raised their crossbows. The bolts hit him in his shoulder and stomach, but Kash keeps swinging, adrenaline making him fierce.   It goes on like this for some time, with neither side winning. But eventually reinforcements arrive: Zela, Rahvin, Bruxin, Alynn, and Mola rush into the house. Rahvin immediately takes in the situation.   "Alynn, go check on his family! Everyone else, focus on the assassins!" He rushes up the steps to help Kash, snarling at the draconic general. "Leave him be! He's just a boy!"   The warning comes to late, as the general suddenly exhales a breath of pure sonic destruction, cracking the walls and denting armor. In the moment of distraction, he hits Kash on the chin, stunning the young man, and runs him through with his sword. Kash collapses, senseless.   Rahvin lets out a cry of outrage and begins to beat down upon the general, blow after blow, until finally, something hits. Some chink in the armor found. And the general goes down, head as good as exploded. Rahvin kneels next to Kash, and gently presses his hands, guided by Anwyn, against the grievous wounds. Kash is brought back from the brink.   The two remaining assassins are gone: one jumped from the window, and the other was contained in an illusion of a windowless chamber. When Mola's chaos orb comes barreling through said illusion, the assassin had already chosen to take his own life rather than be captured.    Zela and Mola rush upstairs to check for the siblings, and find them cowering in the eldest's room - unharmed, thankfully. The two adventurers breathe a sigh of relief and begin to escort the three children back downstairs.   Alynn, meanwhile, has taken the long way around and bursts into the Gladwell patriarch's room, where he sees the carnage. Justus, throat so violently slashed that he's almost beheaded. Audre, her head bashed in on the corner of the fireplace until there's not much that could be called a face left. The room is trashed, searched, decimated. He exits the room and, upon seeing Kash approaching, warns him against going in there.   Kash insists and pushes inside, stopping stock still at what he sees. He falls to his knees, and begins to sob. Rahvin comes in behind him, and takes in both the scene and Kash all in a split second. He wraps his arms around Kash, soothingly stroking his hair.    "I got you.... I got you."
