Temple Pride GSA

Temple Pride is the Gay-Straight Alliance of Temple Valley High School. It is a student-run, student-run, school sponsored organization that provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, and talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.   Although the high school is pro-LGBTQ, Temple Pride provides a safe spaces for LGBTQ students so they may build awareness and community as well as prevent discrimination and harassment in schools. Even in such a progressive area, not everyone in Kinderhook, NY or the surrounding towns, such as Loudonville, NY is pro-LGBTQ.   For more information about real Gay-Straight Alliances, please visit the GSA Network. There may be organizations in your area not listed or affiliated with this website. The information on this page was sourced from the GSA Network website.

Structure

Temple Pride participates in the three typical functions of a GSA organzation: Support, Social, and Activist.

Public Agenda

Temple Pride supports its students by providing the three common activities of a GSA:
  • Social — Students meet and connect with other trans and queer students on campus
  • Support — Students work to create safe spaces and talk about the various issues they face in school or their broader community, such as discrimination from teachers or school administrators
  • Activisim — Students take a leadership role to improve school climate through campaigns and events that raise awareness and change policies or practices in their schools.

History

Temple Pride originally began as a social group for LGBTQ youth to gather and feel safe. In 1992, the emboldened group took their concerns to the school administration and began a positive dialogue for change that resulted in the 1998 shift to activism. The GSA recognizes the importance and authenticity of each and every students' journey and thusly allows its membership to participate or contribute as each person is comfortable.
