27th Session
General Summary
Caspian gets a letter from his stepfather asking to meet him to discuss Mata, and Caspian’s “current employment” at the Cowardly Loch and to please wear a hat. Caspian takes Tasha and Theo with him and takes a hat, but he doesn't wear it. Ellie stays to take care things at the manor. At the tavern, Elvio is irritated that Caspian isn't wearing a hat, tells him to put it on and takes them to another tavern, the Unknown Mice.
There, Elvio says that he heard there was a half-elf at Elkhorn Court and assumed Caspian was involved with "her." If there hasn't been one, there will be someone from a "path of iron" who is very "changeable." He further explains, with some coxing, that he is a member of Society of the Golden Sun, an organization dedicated to advancing Colonel Goldblade's destiny to be the leader of the Time Clan and savior of the world. Elvio expresses discomfort with the "unsavory" actions of sections of the organization which involve "removing the obstacles" for Stoneface to be king and some dismay that they would target an Old One Princess Eirianwen who is under the protection of the Colonel.
Elvio also talks a bit to Caspian about Mata, Caspian's half brother he's looking for. The dog trainer gives Caspian 45 gp to send to his mother and a ram's horn and belt for Mata should Caspian find him.
After they return to Elkhorn Court, they witness Lady Galla repairing the broken window with magic. A freaked out Tasha questions her and Galla explains that although Andrew won't like her using magic, it's better than leaving it broken or sending someone from the city to fix it. Glass is hard for an Earth Mage like her, but she can do it. A majority of Old Ones have magic. Magic tends to run in families and a lot of the Ageless come from ancient magical families. Given the difficulty of the task and lack of regular practice, Galla is now tried.
Tasha goes to process the information about magic and Caspian goes off to process his encounter with Elvio. Theo checks in with Ellie before he goes to find the Colonel and relay what they've found out. He finds Colonel Goldblade in a study with Mattis Roco apparently having a disagreement the lord of manor is done with, but the mental/emotional healer is not.
Theo explains they found out the Society of the Golden Sun is behind the attack and possibly the deaths of the other princes and princesses . Goldblade is familiar with them but didn't think they would be fanatical enough to commit murder. Mattis points out that the last child died 50 years ago and those directly involved are unlikely to be still involved. Theo points out that the cult is unlikely to actually listen to the object of its adoration. Mattis suggests that one way to keep the princess safe would be appease the society and have the Colonel marry her so that he and she would be next in the line of succession and there would be no reason to harm her. Goldblade says he'll take it "into consideration."
Theo asks the Colonel for clarification on the party's employment. He wants them to stay a bit longer, at least until proper reinforcements arrive in some days. He will even double their pay to 40 gp per day as the 20 gp was when he didn't think she would actually be in danger once she was at the manor. Theo comes up with a code phrase of "triple T" for the Colonel. Theo leaves, while Mattis refuses to do so.
TLDR: Caspian, Tasha and Theo talk to Caspian's stepfather who knows the Society of the Golden Sun, motivated by a desire to see the Colonel Stoneface as king, is behind the attempt on the princess's life. Galla is magic. Theo tells the Colonel what they learned. Stoneface does want to the party to stay for a while longer.
