The Underdark
Geography
Little is known about the Underdark. The only creatures who know how to travel between it and the surface world are the Namar, or Nigh Elves. The Namar are a reclusive and hostile people only interested in sharing information if they are forced. The only ways the 'surface folk' learn of the Underdark are when a Namar was captured and integrated or when they sold the information for a steep price. It is said that the Underdark is a place of neverending space. Gargantuan caverns equal in size to whole provinces, crystal and stalactite covered ceilings, and a winding labyrinth of tunnels connecting one caver to another. The Namar have told of their cities, metropolises that hold more Night Elves than small nations on the surface. The eeriest part of the Namar's tales is when they talk about these cities, how they are not just inhabited by Elves but also creatures spawned and created in the Underdark.
Ecosystem
While little is known about the geography of the Underdark even less is known about its ecosystem. Some merchants will say that a small plant and even an insect has come from the Underdark but there is no way to be sure. These things could just as simply be alchemic creations of mages. The Namar never bring anything but metals or gems from the Underdark. Once a Namar trader got so drunk in the Stone City of Luime she told of glowing fungus, flying rocks, and spiders capable of eating a grown person whole. Strange and unnatural creatures have been known to claw their way out of deep holes and caverns. When they do even trained guards send for the nation's best group of adventures to come and kill the creatures.
History
The first known reference to the Underdark was during the Corruption of the Night Elves. The cave of Drizlash the Nine Eyed Corruptor is said to have been located within the Underdark. While there is no proof that the cave was within the Underdark, or that the cave even exists, historians still point to this as the first official reference of the Underdark's existence.
More modern references have occurred during the Era of Humanity. While the Namar were enslaved alone with the rest of the world there was never a large number of them. Rummor had it that the Night Elf Kingdom and The Glimmer Dynasty came to an agreement just like the Dynasty did for the Free Gnomish City. The rumor was that because the Dynasty couldn't get its airships into the Underdark that attacking the Night Elves head on was next to impossible. While the Dynasty never admitted to this of course. The historical evidence of this would be a squodrin of four airships that went missing at the high of human power. These airships were said to have gone to put down a Nigh Elf uprising. Only one ship was found, it was crashed and almost completely dismantled in the Uratin Mountains.
Today most people belive that the Underdark is just a large cave complex under the continent of Spire. However, everyone agrees that this cave complex is exceptionally deadly to all those except the Namar. Some adventuring companies have been sent into the Underdark but only a few have returned, and those that have refuse to speak a word about it to anyone.
