Baugluicil Mael
Lieutenant Mael Baugluicil (a.k.a. Kelpie)
Lieutenant Baugluicil Mael is the chief navigation and control officer of the human starship UCS Virage.
Mael was born to a general in the Socialist Party of the Taenost Belt. She would have a sheltered but well-rounded upbringing, and go on to live through the one of the most formative years in the planet's history.
Mael’s family was very uncharacteristic for a lavan one. They had the average amount of children, 20 siblings, they weren’t very close with each other, the whole deal was much more like a human family; the parents ruled the household with an unwavering strictness and the children were merely subjects of their rule. Mael hated this; she thought their family should’ve been built on mutual respect and equal treatment between parent and child, like other lavan families. Mael joined the state air force as soon as she could, seeing it as a potential to lead to becoming an ithilonaut (star sailor in their language, anglicized). While in flight school and basic training Mael had as little contact with her parents and many of her siblings as possible. During her time training Mael was radicalized into the Silver Front, an anti-government organization attempting to infiltrate the state's military forces. When the rebellion began Mael aided the Silver Front in overtaking the airbase she was stationed at.
Mael was one of the soldiers inside Guruthos proper when another rebel group took the city hostage by nuclear bomb. The city was held for nearly a year with the purpose of “liberating it”, removing the wealthy and returning it to the poor. Virage and others came to aid the planet in this time, Freeborn becoming a symbol of hope to the trapped soldiers and civilians. Jessi worked as an officer on the ground in the operation that disabled the nuke. Mael and Jessi worked together regularly during this period, the two forming a strong soldier’s bond. Mael thought it was a bit more than that; Jessi was her savior, and she owed the captain an eternal debt.
After guruthos was secured as a free city, the people living there were aided in becoming an interstellar people and brought into the Systems Conglomerate. Mael joined Virage as a small-craft pilot at first then was eventually promoted to navigation-control officer. Mael sees Virage and crew as her the family she never had; or so it was until it became a military ship with strict rank and power structures. Within a few months of joining Virage's crew, Meis and Mael fell in love. Over the next two years they were very on and off, with Mael usually being the one to leave first.
Mael fears power; either having power for herself or those with power over her. She also fears being a parent, imagining that she'll fuck up her children as bad as she thinks her parents messed her up. Mael fears commitment in a romantic relationship, even dating outside of her species, because she knows commitment leads to children.
