Affinity

An Affinity is a predisposition to a certain School of Magick, but it goes beyond a preference. Those with an Affinity are born with access to this school at a much younger age. They're also the most capable of Mastery and developing the School further through research. An Affinity does not actually guarantee that one is capable of mastering the School, however, and certain people may still be more powerful than others that share the same Affinity. While most Schools can be performed and mastered by anyone, the Schools of Time and Necromancy can't be mastered at all without an Affinity, and Time cannot even be performed without one.   There is a limitation to Affinity. While it allows for the highest potential within a School, most casters with an Affinity are not able to perform at an equal level in other Schools. Those with a Physical Affinity (Evocation, Transmutation, Conjuration, or Necromancy) have a significantly harder time performing Mental magick (Abjuration, Enchantment, Illusion, Divination, or Time), and vice versa. Those without an Affinity are, with some variation, more equally skilled with all Schools and more capable of a broader retinue.   Affinities themselves aren't especially rare. On average, roughly a quarter of all casters at any one time have an Affinity, though some are stronger than others. Some Affinities are also more common. Though periods of history have had different distributions (for example, no Time casters were born at all from 1609-1712, and no one has figured out why), the chances have been calculated as follows: Evocation (22%), Transmutation (20%), Conjuration (16.5%), Abjuration (13%), Enchantment (9.6%), Illusion (8%), Divination (6%), Necromancy (4.8%), and Time (0.1%).
