Dewi
Dewi (a.k.a. The Minstrel)
Dewi, or Dewi the Minstrel is an uncommon but popular figure when he appears in Teller Town on Egg Island. He arrives, when he does, on the trading ships of the Sea Mongers in early summer and will often stay the entire season. Occasionally he will even spend an entire year on the island.
He arrives with few possessions beyond his beloved harp and flute, just a change of clothes and a cloak for inclement weather. He relies on the generosity of innkeepers and tavern owners such as The Waterwheel Pub and families to keep him housed and fed. The children love him, adults smile when he is sighted, and all seem to appreciate his music and his outlook on life. While it cannot be proven, many are certain that certain sayings in the Book of Ramblings are his.
He is expert on both flute and harp, and his voice can range from a high tenor to a low baritone at will - although he has been known to squeak a bit if he tries for too high a note. The songs he sings range from lyrical ballads of love and loss, to rousing tales of adventure and glory. He tells many stories, both those familiar to the locals and fantastical ones from far away lands.
He will play coin games with the children, making a penny appear out of their ears, or rolling the coin across his knuckles, making it disappear, then reappear. He is generous as well, often a child in need will find a coin or two in her pocket that wasn't there earlier.
He inspires confidence and trust and people find themselves sharing their most pressing concerns with him, almost without realizing they are doing so. Perhaps it is his genuine air of compassion, perhaps it's because he is a stranger and therefore apart from the problem.
There is much more to Dewi than mere entertainment. Problems that seem insurmountable, both individual and community-wide seem to find solutions after he has been present. A troubled marriage finds husband and wife listening to each other and remembering the love they shared in the beginning and the many good times and trials they have already overcome and are reconciled. An orphan child on the streets and scared, just happens to encounter a childless couple who have an abundance of love to give. Those merchants who are hoping that their goods to be traded to the Sea Mongers will earn a fair price are pleasantly surprised to be offered more than ever before.
