Teller Town
The largest community on Egg Island, Teller Town sits at the mouth of the Virre in a small natural harbor open to the western ocean. While the largest settlement on the island that is not saying much, Teller Town probably only has a few thousand people who live there permanently.
The economy is simple, agricultural goods come into the city and created goods go out. Some trading is also done with the mainland, but only a limited amount as their is some difficulty getting to the town from elsewhere in the world. The seas are not kind, so trade only happens with a few ships and a narrow window of opportunity.
The town, being small, is very loosely run. The citizens see little need for any large government, having determined decades ago that most issues can be solved without need for a higher authority. There is one constable and his deputy and a simple lock-up, mostly used for drunken disturbers of the peace. Theft is rare, and the non-governmental organization the Vigilants manage most issues that cannot be solved in a one-on-one situation.
Generally speaking, the town has the greatest difficulty during trading season, as the sailors that come ashore expect this place to be similar to other harbor towns and are sometimes improperly upset when it is not so. There are no places that allow drunken binges, or prostitution in Teller Town, the citizens find no need for such and aren't about to provide such places for the sailors.
Most of the buildings in town are built of timber or stone or both and the three main roads that lead from harbor through town are cobbled. Cross streets may be cobbled, or dirt, or occasionally even brick, depending on the resources and wishes of the residents there. The homes are generally small, but with extensive back gardens to provide for the households with some to sell or share.
A few organizations have a presence in the town, but there are few that are only here. Among them are the Egg Island Sisters who have their guild hall, Abbey of the Egg Island Sisters in town. The Sentinel Rangers keep an office of sorts here as well, mostly for recruiting purposes, although most of their recruits are not townies. The only group that is mostly in town are the Vigilants as they deal with town problems almost exclusively.
Most businesses have congregated alone the central road leading up from the docks. Families often live above their shops. Fishing boats dock on the eastern side of the harbor, where they can sail up the Virre, or out to sea if they are brave. A few warehouses have been constructed near the docks, to store the items the town hopes to sell or trade when the ships come in as well as a place to store what they may receive from the ships.
Defences
A low wall has been built around the town, but it is woefully inadequate as any sort of defense. It was built more to identify the official town boundaries and to limit the wandering of livestock or wildlife. Made of rocks from river and sea it's only about three feet tall. The docks open onto the town.
History
When the first settlers from the mainland to the east managed to navigate to the western side of Egg Island they established Teller Town early on as it was the only known place where ships could dock and not require a risky landing with small boats. The town grew gradually through natural increase and the arrival of other settlers, never many, but a steady trickle.
Geography
Constructed along the banks of the Virre, just as it enters the western ocean, it is near a small but deep harbor that has had docks and a seawall built to accommodate the few trading vessels that make landfall here. The town is is well above the high tide mark, spread out on the coastal plains.
Trees were rare when the first settlers arrived, but now there are many, most every home boasts at least one fruit or shade tree. Because wood was so dear in the early years, and had to be imported at great cost, a small forest was cultivated on the north side of the town, which has now grown into a substantial area of woods. Limited cutting of the trees is done now, but others are always planted to replace and expand the groves.
