Egg Island Sisters

The organization of Namers on Egg Island, the Sisters are responsible for both the First and Second Naming Ceremony provided to the children of the island. They are among the smallest organization of Namers known, living and serving as they do on the remote Egg Island.    Their headquarters is a small building in Teller Town  repurposed for their needs. Generally only a few of the sisters are in residence at any given time as their numbers are small and the communities they must care for are remote. Since namers traditionally live in the communities they serve, only the Sisters responsible for Teller town have a mostly permanent presence there.   The sisters hold the distinction of being the caretakers of the Benediction Tablet, the oldest known copy of their naming rituals and ceremonies. They take great care of it, but at it is many centuries old, there is little they can do to halt the decay of age.   Most senior of the Sisters is probably Auntie Namés. While in other places the senior Namer might opt for a comfortable position in the most advanced community she could find, she chooses not to do so. Her most recent posting is rumored to be up against the wall of the Dragonbone Mountains, a tiny community that hunts, fishes, and creates items from the resources around them.

Structure

One or more senior sisters take charge of the newer members, making sure they learn and perform their duties in a manner both respectful and respectable. Retired sisters keep the records, and manage the finances. Any heavy work beyond the capabilities of the available sisters is hired out or acquired as payment for the naming ceremonies.   The hierarchy is not rigid, but generally looks much like this:
  • Honoured Eldest - the retired Sisters, those who no longer teach or travel, but who live in or near the Abbey and do the record-keeping and financial duties.
  • Most Senior sister - the eldest, or most experienced sister.
  • Seniors - those who have been Namers for years, who either devote themselves to teaching or serve a few months of the year as instructors.
  • Field Sisters - those who are living and serving throughout the Island, providing Naming services to the people in their communities. They also take apprentices if there are women who express an interest in the profession.
  • Young Sisters - this is a bit misleading as the Namers are generally women of mature years, not young women.  These are those who have come to learn the profession, either on their own, or sent by a Field Sister after a period of apprenticeship.
