Abbey of the Egg Island Sisters

Called an Abbey by both the locals and the Sisters who currently occupy the structure, the name is merely a holdover from its original use. The Sisters are no religious organization, but rather a profession in need of a building, and this one was available.

Purpose / Function

The Guildhall for the Egg Island Sisters, is where the records of Naming are stored, where those who wish to take up Naming in a professional manner are trained and where the offices of the Senior Sisters are established. If you need to learn the 'liturgy' of a proper naming ceremony, you come here. If you want to view and learn the words of the prayers, you can see the Benediction Tablet and study from the assorted copies made of it.

Alterations

Based on the surviving records, the Sisters had some interior walls removed, expanding the small cells of the monks into larger offices and study areas.

Architecture

Built of sandstone from nearby quarries, the walls have a golden-orange glow to them on sunny days. The building is two levels above ground plus a basement primarily used for storage. A kitchen building stands on the northern side of the property, not far from the Abbey proper, and is also made of sandstone blocks.   The peaked roof is sealed against the element with wooden shingles. They are in need of replacement.

History

Prior to the Sisters acquisition of the building, it served as an abbey for a small group of religious devotees of the prophet Kedar They died out about 50 years ago, likely due to their commitment to celibacy.
