Session 08: Danger at Dunwater Report

General Summary

The party, aware that the Lizardfolk are part of the Potlatch Economy, decide that - to establish contact with the Lizardfolk - to host their own potlatch. Their list of plans include:

  • Plan A. Host their own Potlatch and talk with lizardfolk
  • Plan B. Host the Potlatch and sneak into their house during the party
  • Plan C. Host the Potlatch and seduce a lizardfolk
  • Plan D. DNE
  • Plan E.-Y. Stammer
  • Plan Z. Murder

Uk-Thin wants the Queen to negotiate with the Saltmarsh Town Council, but Fishcod and Virion remind them that this is the party's mission. Fishcod wants more tact, while Mystan is more prone to revealing everything they know.

They want to sail nearby via the Sea Ghost, set anchor, row to shore, and approach by land. While preparing, Virion and Uk-Thin approach Mannistrad, and request greater resources from her. Given Uk-Thin's support and Virion's expertise, she eventually conceeds to the idea and makes arrangements for some silk and brandy from the Sea Ghost to be used in the party. Before they leave, Oceanus joins the party to the Lizardfolk.

The party lands at point A by the Dunwater River's mouth, ford at the island (point B), and head to the promotory. Knowing that the Sea Ghost is potentially a liability, they instruct the gaurds to leave and set sail further back east, and the party sets up a camp on the eastern(?) shore near point B, leaving Oceanus and a gaurd there.

The party decides to enter the cave at point C, solely because it is closer. This alerts the Giant Lizards, but thanks to an excelent Animal Handling check from Fishcod and a Catapult'ed ration from Uk-Thin, the Giant Lizards stand down. After some deliberation, they bring them before Queen Othokent in the Banquet Hall, where she is mid-potlatch.

Salamander is named "Ohfuckwait", aka Ophuquait, who is a Giant Salamander and has been terrorizing the Lizardfolk. They accept the Queen's quest, break camp and return to the Sea Ghost, resting and heading out in the morning. Fiddling with weapons - and attuning to the Mariner's Armor, after identifying it - a bit of Dragon Chess (Uk-Thin, somehow, wins against Virion. Virion then kicks Fishcod's butt, several times. After trancing about it and staying up all night playing, Fishcod still loses!).

In the morning, the party sets out to take on Ophuquait. They travel by land, and encounter a bunch of rats! Two groups of them with one giant rat. Fishcod runs forward and uses Green Flame Blade with a spear to stab a swarm, burning into them. Uk-Thin then catapults some drift woodat a swarm, and commands the homonculous to Help Mystan. Mystan - with the aid of the homonculous - follows up with a Toll the Dead. Virion pulls out all the stops, casting Witch Bolt at second level, zapping the Big Rat - frying it, and causing it to transform into a littlefolk clad in bark garments encrusted in fungus. She lifts her crooked staff, and casts Thunderwave, dealing damage to Fishcod, cursing her as a "Servant of Her". Some of the rats then swarm Fishcod, while the others carry the lady away - and she says she refuses to let "Her take me back". Fishcod takes an opportunity attack, and misses horribly. They try again, casting Hex (dexterity) and chasing after with a spear. Uk-Thin follows, punching her and trying to shove her with his shield. Mystan attempts to sacred flame her rat swarm, but misses and then follows a bit, and Virion - still thirty feet distant - drops Witch Bolt and sprints forward, activating his bladesong.

The lady glares at Virion and Fishcod, and suddenly she disappears, her hat falling to the ground and the rats dispersing. Looking under the hat, the tail of a small salamander disappears into the reeds and muck. The party discusses the woman's odd words, wondering who "Her" could be. Catching up, Oceanus offers up that it may be Queen Othokent? Virion suspects that it was directed at Fishcod specifically, but Fishcod counters that they're serving the council - just like everybody else here. The group decides to just keep moving, but is generally unsettled by the jan pana woman's strange remarks.

Avoiding some wasps and sneaking past a troll, the party comes to Ophuquait's brackish pool. The monstrously large Slamander rests atop a muddy mound in the ccenter of the pool, and two huge snakes dwell in the twisting canopy above. The party makes preperations: Uk-Thin's Homonculous ventures to the far side, Mystan casts Bless on the party, Virion draws his pistol, Fishcod draws their pact weapon, and finally casts Dancing Lights as a glowing humanoid by the loud homonunclous, distracting the enemies.

The snakes go to investigate, dropping from the canopy onto the Dancing Lights and being very confused. Ophuquait then makes for the Homonuculous, causing the the Homonculous to flee.

Uk-Thin opens by hurling a stone at Ophuquait via Catapult once he has drawn closer to the party. Ophuquait would be hit, but uses a Legendary Resistance to make it miss. The Homonculous dashes, and Ophuquait lunges forward, continuing the chase. Mystan uses Guiding Bolt on Ophuquait, hitting and causing it to howl in pain. Ophuquait continues to run, catching up with the Homonculous and reducing it to but it's gem-heart. Virion moves up 10 feet and casts Witch Bolt at second level (again, with lots of aid from Mystan's Bless and Guiding Bolt), and begins the Bladesong. Ophuquait lunges towards Virion, and Fishcod contuines the barrage by firing a crossbow, misses, and uses Misty Step to hide behind a tree 30 feet away.Ophuquait lunges.

Uk-Thin continues, casting Grease centered on Ophuquait, causing the Salamander to fall prone. They then move up to the edge of the grease. 'Misty' uses Spiritual Weapon (getting advantage due to Ophuquait being prone), a spectral talon ripping into the salamnder - and adding a failed Toll the Dead, finishing by moving to be next to Uk-Thin. Ophuquait stands up prone, and dashes to get out and be 10 feet away from the party. Virion launches another With Bolt from the storm cloud he summoned along the link, hurting him badly to the point of being Bloodied. Ophuquait retreats via Lung, and Fishcod unleashes an Eldritch Blast, striking thanks to their hidden nature. Ophuquait then lunges once more, diving into the water.

The stoneborn artificer shoots the salamnder with a gun, critically hitting. They then move towards the shore, getting up next to the shore. Ophuquait responds with biting them as a legendary action, because DUH and Mystan uses Spiritual Weapon to deal even more damage, and then runs to the shore and hits him with a 2nd level Inflict Wounds - barely not killing him. The Witch Bolt is broken as Ophuquait disengages, and hides in the brackish water.

Virion casts Sleep in the middle of the pond, causing Ophuquait to rise, asleep. The snakes drop, but are quickly mopped up. Oceanus lands the killing blow with a critical hit Trident, and the head is retrieved.
