Rhoceni (Roe-sen-e)

Known far and wide for their physical prowess, rhoceni, or sometimes just called rho, possess strength unmatched by other races. Bipedal long-lived rhinos, Rhoceni are extremely rare. Those that exist often exclude themselves, as they are aware that their strength could be devastating when improperly used, and they are often hunted for their horns. Despite this, rhoceni will often venture into the world, looking to test themselves and lend their strength to worthy causes.

Rhoceni horns are highly coveted for their ivory, and many believe one can actually gain the great strength of the rhoceni through powdering a rhocenis horn and applying the powered to their muscles, or even ingesting the substance.

Facial characteristics

All rhoceni sport some sort of horn on their snouts. Female horns are considerable smaller than males, but are no less deadly.

A majority of rhoceni live in hidden villages in Ardlam, but some islands in Vatenrelm have arctic variants.

Rhoceni vary greatly in their intelligence and education by region and tribe. By a whole, most rhoceni lead towards the mastery of their physical bodies, which often leads them to focus less on their minds.

Beauty Ideals

The length of a male's horn establishes much about how attractive it is considered.

Gender Ideals

Male rhoceni are much more aggressive then females, and thus generally become warriors and protectors. Females often become the craftsman and trade-people of the villages.

Courtship Ideals

Male rhoceni prove their worthiness to a female by partaking in an intense 24 hour ritual, where the female attempts to escape a certain territory. If the male can succeed in keeping the female in the territory for 24 hours, it shows that he has proven his strength to her, and thus is a suitable partner.

Relationship Ideals

Many rhoceni view smaller creatures then them as something to be protected, and thus often form mentorship or protector roles with either a younger rhoceni or a creature of another race.

Most rhoceni speak Rhoceni and Ard Common, but can also be found speaking Aboleth, Aquan, Celestial, Giant, Luxan, Ratosk, Sylvan

It is common for male rhoceni to greet each other by tapping their horns together forcefully.

Most rhoceni wear simple, tight clothes that don't hinder their already slow movements.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

In warmer climates, a rhocenis' bulk means that they often struggle with overheating. To combat this, they enjoy bathing in large pools of mud in able to cool down. Due to their constant muddiness means that they also greatly enjoy bathing, and often leave slots in their evening for bathing the days mud off.

Common Taboos

Due to the frequency that they are targeted by poachers, poaching or hunting animals or races of any kind for anyting other than food is viewed with disgust by the rhoceni.

Most rhoceni worship their Primal Beastman, Rhakra, the Smasher.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The rhocenis mighty strength intimidates other races, and it is believed that their horns contain the essence of their strength. For this, they are often hunted for their horns (although the hunt usually ends with the hunter trampled or gored to death.). Because of these reasons, they prefer to seclude themselves away from most races. They get along well with the Luxor, as they are both of larger sizes.

Language A rhoceni begins play speaking Common (Ard) and Rhoceni. Rhoceni with high intelligence can choose from the following: Alka, Giant, Luxan, Nezumi Orcish, Tengu or Undercommon.

  • Materil: Rhoceni are intrinsically tied to the Earth Materil, and must become Earthbreakers.
  • Animal Minded: A rhoceni gains a +2 racial bonus to Handle Animal and wild empathy checks towards rhino-like creatures. This bonus increases by one for each two hit dice beyond the 1st the rhoceni possesses.
  • Gore: A rhoceni gain a gore natural attack that deals 1d6 points of piercing damage. This attack is a primary natural attack. The gore damage increases to 1d8 at 3rd racial level and 1d10 at 5th racial level.
  • Steady Mind: A rhocenis mental fortitude grants it a +2 racial bonus to Will saves. This bonus increases by one for every four hit dice beyond the 1st the rhoceni possesses.
  • Natural Armor: Starting at 2nd racial level, a rhoceni gains a +2 natural armor bonus to its AC. This bonus increases by one at 4th racial level.
  • Powerful Charge: A rhoceni is capable of using its massive bulk to aid it's charges. Starting at 2nd racial level, whenever a rhoceni charges, it deals twice the number of damage dice with its gore plus 1-1/2 times its Strength bonus.
  • Bull’s Strength (Sp): Starting at 3rd racial level, 1/day a rhoceni can cast bull's strength on themselves as a spell-like ability, using their total hit dice as their caster level. At 5th racial level, they can use this ability on other creatures, acting as mass bull's strength, targeting a number of creatures equal to 1/2 their hit dice.
  • Unstoppable Charger: Starting at 5th racial level, whenever a rhoceni charges, it gains a +1 racial bonus to attack and damage rolls for each 10 feet of movement it makes between itself and the target of its charge. A rhoceni can move through difficult terrain when charging, as long as it has at least 10 feet of movement before entering difficult terrain, and that difficult terrain doesn't impede its movement. The rhoceni can attempt to charge through obstacles, but they must succeed a Strength check to break those obstacles or the charge fails and their turn ends.

Alternate Racial Traits
  • Gatecrasher: Some rhoceni specialize in destroying obstacles that would block their path. They gain a +4 racial bonus on Strength checks to break objects and a +4 racial bonus on Sunder combat maneuvers. These bonuses increase by 1 for every four hit dice beyond the 1st the rhoceni possesses. This replaces the Steady Mind trait.
  • Healthy: Some rhoceni are more resistant to disease, gaining a +4 racial bonus against diseases and poisons, including magical diseases. This bonus increases by 1 for every four hit dice beyond the 1st the rhoceni possesses. This trait replaces the Steady Mind trait.
  • Hulk: Some rhoceni grow to massive sizes. These rhoceni are Large sized, gaining a +4 Strength, a +2 Constitution, and a -4 Dexterity. Large creatures take a -1 size penalty to their AC, a -1 size penalty on attack rolls, a +1 size bonus on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a -4 penalty on Stealth checks. This trait replaces the Animal Minded and Steady Mind traits, and alters the rhoceni's size.
  • Undersight: A rare few rhoceni dwell in caves or tunnels underground. This rhoceni gain darkvision of 60 feet and light sensitivity, as well as replace Common with Undercommon as a starting language. This trait alters the rhocenis senses and languages.
Woolly: Some rhoceni instead dwell on cold remote islands in Vatenrelm. These rhoceni gain a +2 bonus on saves against cold weather and spells with the cold descriptor, and are tied to the Water Materil instead of the Earth Materil. This trait replaces the Steady Mind trait and alters the rhocenis' Materil.
