Uén

The Shaper Uén

Uén is the elven goddess of the land.

Domain

Uén is sometimes called Uén the Shaper, as many elves hold that she is primarily responsible for the creation of their race. She is thought to govern the land and that which grows and lives on it, plants, animals, and fungi alike. She provides food and the fresh water that elves need to survive, earth and stone are hers to shape, and the heat of a volcano is a glimpse of her terrible anger.   Regarded as a generous and caring deity, it is difficult to rouse her to fury, but she is deeply frightening when provoked. Elves across Materia refer to themselves as the Children of Uén, and it is widely believed that she made the first elves by throwing some clay onto a pottery wheel and shaping them, leaving them to bake in the sun for a while before breathing the spark of life into them.

Symbolism

Uén is customarily depicted as a curvaceous elven woman with shoulder-length hair. Her skin is often brown, and her hair can be any color, though orange, brown, and blonde are the most common. She is frequently clad in a skirt or wrap of some kind which covers her from the waist to around the ankles, usually topless and always barefoot. Orange, green, and brown are her colors, and are often seen on her clothing. She is sometimes depicted in festive contexts with wildflowers in her hair. When wroth, she is seen stomping on the ground with her bare feet, causing tremors and volcanic activity.

Places of Worship

Uén is worshipped in some manner by nearly all aboveground elven societies, including Regnum Solas, Ola Thamar, Tethia, and Melrune.

History

Uén's history is primarily unknown, although the first accounts of her influence upon Materia date back to the War of the Gods.
