Beacon Town

A small, coastal village that acts as one of two gateway settlements to The Shimmering Isle. Beacon Town is named for the large lighthouse beacon that sits on it's sandy shores to guide passing ships and signal to the ferry from Port Irke. It was founded by the The Elven Sovereignty early in teir rule as they established a foothold on The Shimmering Isle.

Demographics

Beacon Town has a fairly wide ranging and mixed population as a result of it's proximity to The Mage's College in Radia. Although mainly humans, dwarves, elves and half-elves, there are individuals from most races living in this small community. They tend to be mages, or at the very least interested in magic to some extent, which is what has driven them to live here. As a key settlement on The Shimmering Isle acting as a gateway from the mainland where many visitors and prospective students pass through, Beacon Town keeps afloat from tourism and trade income mostly.

Government

Beacon Town is part of Radia's Magocracy, ran by The Mage's College in Radia. In addition to their duties to the college, it is up to the Archmage to run the settlements on The Shimmering Isle, including governing the local laws, employing key workers and setting the tax policy that helps keep the college funded as well as contributing to The Empire's coffers.

Infrastructure

Beacon Town primarily consists of scattered stone houses across the shore and into the woodlands behind. There is a large inn just up from the ferry docks and a general store adjacent, along with a few market stalls used by passing traders. Several smaller inns are scattered through the central part of the village, with enough rooms to accomodate the entire population of the village. The main feat of infrastructure is the large lighthouse on the headland which is powered by an enchanted orb of glass rotating at its peak. As such, it requires little maintenance though a lighthouse keeper with some magical ability tends to live here for general upkeep and inspection.

Tourism

A lot of people visit The Shimmering Isle to take in the sights, study the rare magical phenomena that occurs here, visit The Mage's College as prospective students or simply to visit Radia and explore a town dominated by mages. Most of these people pass through Beacon Town at some point, usually staying at one of the inns here and spending enough coin in the taverns and markets to keep the village comfortably afloat.
