Foundation
During the days of
The Engelian Empire, magic was a legal activity, even being encouraged in some locations. Wizards and sorcerers would build their towers and laboratories inside cities, often taking apprentices and raising scholars from the masses, in order to spread out and disseminate knowledge. However, as more and more people got to learn magic and develop their abilities, some started delving into more dangerous and dark areas of the lore of Magic. With that, evil sorcerers and criminals arose in the world and catastrophes happened, as evil spirits got created, demons were brought to Mellanvärlden and corruption swept into the earth.
At some point in time, a powerful sorcerer attempted to open a portal to
Kunskar, in an effort to access seemingly infinite knowledge and magical power. For reasons unknown to history, the endeavor went awfully wrong, for instead of opening an actual gateway, the wizard established a link between the realm of Magic, but not before his body and soul got overwhelmed by a huge flow of Magi. As a consequence, magic swept all across the world, in a chaotic manner, corrupting and tainting the very soil of Mellanvärlden, and from that day beyond, a new enemy arose in the world, an enemy that was capable of spawning from every shadow, hole and bog, an enemy that would only hunt those marked by Magi, this event became known as The Linking. There are also legends that tell that the sorcerer did not perish that day, but instead became something else. Nevertheless, that could never be confirmed.
As a consequence to his failed spell, magic no longer was safe, for wherever there lived a gifted individual, death and corruption would follow, as the newly created enemy had unending numbers and felt no remorse or fear. Because of that, the Engelian Empire abolished the practice of magic, and all those who wielded Magi were either killed, exiled or "sterilized". To make sure something akin to the Linking would never happen again, a mighty military organization was created: The Order. This event had such a magnitude upon the world that calendars were changed, as a new era had dawned upon the world, an era where magic was abolished and the world turned it's back in the ones unfortunate enough to be born with such skills.
Their goal would be simple, to protect the world from corruption and to stop anything and anyone that could bring more of it to Mellanvärlden. They would establish outposts all across
Manniskar and watch out for any threats and magical anomalies.
Present Days
Despite the fall of Engelia, The Order still exists to this day, with the same purpose and objective. However, they no longer keep their outposts, remaining in the domains of Thortyr, but this doesn't stop them from sending their legendary warriors all across the continent in order to fight any magical threat. An example of their efficiency was the downfall of The Shadows of Exodus in 1000 EL by the hands of Mutes from The Order. Differently from the past, the organization is now much more politically involved in Thortyr and all kings must be elected by the council of the military organization
Order and Courage.
