The Karstarks can trace their lineage all the way back to the Starks, through the female line, formed as a cadet branch from one of the Starks conquests.
During the Long Night, the Karstarks nearly died out. Sighorn of Thenns married Alys Karstark to keep the family going and increase ties to the Free Folk.
