Jorah is the Uncle of Maria Mormont, and the current heir to the title "Lord of Bear Island" as the only other living and legitimate member of the family. He is seen to be a cheerful and aloof person in his private life, in contrast to his niece who is seen as serious most of the time, though he can steel himself and become quite serious when he feels the situation calls for it. Despite being 56 as of 421 AC, Jorah is still quite fit and able-bodied. Combined with his experience as a soldier and a sailor, he is quite the formidable force on the battlefield and just as dangerous as any younger man. Because of this, he often acts as Maria's personal guard during times at war and her envoy when she cannot be called away from the battlefield or other duties. Jorah was a dedicated family man, but he lost his wife and two kids to a sickness that he caught as well and somehow only he alone lived through it. Perhaps that is why he is so protective of his niece and often treats her as if she were his own daughter, having both lost the rest of their family and only having each other going forward. These days, Jorah spends much of his time looking after Bear Island in the absence of Lady Maria.
