Profile
Sharanel is the current Fantasmal quickener as well as the goddaughter of the current Fantasma. Though only seventeen, Sharanel is a quickener prodigy and is considered one of the top three quickeners in the world. She takes her role in the mountain very seriously and is far more mature than her age suggests. She’s eager to serve the Fantasma, whom she idolizes, and is desperate to prove herself to him as well as anyone else who doubts her abilities.
Early Childhood
Sharanel was born in the city of Zohare in northern Lumaria to Luke and Winterbell Quicksilver. Her parents were both quickeners in service to the Fantasmal Government and worked in the Transportation Corridor. Unlike most Fantasmal Government employees, The Quicksilvers did not live in the mountain. They preferred to stay in Zohare where they’d lived since getting married. This meant that they didn’t benefit from all the perks of living in Teedmount, but Luke and Winterbell felt this made them more grounded and appreciative of life.
Sharanel was brought up in a very loving environment. Not only did her parents dote on her, but the small community they lived in was extremely close-knit and friendly. In addition, her Godfather was Fantasma and though she only understood his position partially as a child, she knew he was very important and everyone seemed to respect him, or even be in awe of him, yet he seemed to treat her special.
At age five, both of Sharanel’s parents were called away to assist with an emergency in a nearby mine in the Lumarian Mountains. Several miners were trapped due to an unexpected earthquake caused by a fault in the weather template. Sharanel was left with her babysitter, Sherrilynn for several days. During that time another weather anomaly caused a tornado to touch down in the middle of Zohare, causing widespread panic. Fortunately, Sherrilynn was able to organize an evacuation of everyone in the affected area, keep people calm, and ultimately save a lot of lives, including Sharanel’s.
Though Sharanel and the people in Zohare survived the tornado, weather anomalies continued in the area and a second earthquake in the mountains south of the city caused the already unstable mine to completely collapse killing everyone in it, including Sharanel’s parents.
Sharanel was left an orphan. She had no other family in Zohare and no one in the community knew if Luke or Winterbell had family anywhere else since the couple never spoke about it. When Fantasma heard about the couple’s death he returned to Zohare and upon realizing Sherrilynn had nowhere else to go, he took on his role as godfather and brought Sherrilynn to live in Fantasmal Mountain with him.
It had been over a millennium since the Fantasma had family living in the mountain as most guardians were unmarried, despite there not being any sort of rule against it. As such, Sharanel was considered sort of an oddity. Suddenly the Fantasma had a five-year-old daughter who he had no idea how to take care of, so many of the mountain’s high-ranking officials, and their families, banded together to help.
Though, in Sharanel’s mind, no one could ever take the place of her parents, she found surrogate family in a lot of the people in the mountain. Helen Bensellnot was like a wise grandmother, Norman Rockwall a rowdy and playful uncle, Isabelle Panwright an older sister, and the list went on. Sharanel had almost a dozen, surrogate aunts, uncles, grandparents, and older siblings throughout the mountain staff. However, Fantasma was always just Fantasma. Even though he was her godfather and he treated her well, the fact that everyone who interacted with him treated him with such deference skewed how she saw him. Sharanel never considered him family, and it was more like he was her benefactor. As such, their relationship was fairly distant. She saw him as everyone else did, as the Fantasma. Despite this, she knew the Fantasma cared about her and was grateful that he took her in. She admired him greatly and wanted to payback his kindness. In a way, she felt she owed him.
The Prodigy
At age seven, when children first truly start to develop their adimus abilities, it was determined that Sharanel, like both her parents, had the quickener adimus rank. This was expected as it was extremely common for the quickener rank to be passed down in families. Though she was young, she already knew she wanted to be a quickener to honor the memory of her parents.
However, it quickly became apparent that Sharanel was extremely gifted, able to control and master her mentus even as her adimus was still developing. Most children can barely use any mentus before the age of ten, but even at seven, Sharanel had access to the mentant realm and could use basic mentus.
Seeing this, Fantasma did everything he could to nurture her natural talent. In addition to going to primary school, several members of her surrogate family tutored her in mentus. By the time she was ten, she’d already mastered all standard mentus and was moving into advanced mentus and even started learning the basics of quickening. Though she still technically had two years left in primary school, Fantasma used his authority to pull her from there and enroll her in an advanced mentus school, effectively skipping five years of education. Sharanel flourished in her new educational environment despite being so much younger than her peers and it was clear that she was in an environment where her advanced skills could be challenged appropriately.
Two years passed and Sharanel, age twelve, graduated from the advanced mentus school with a full grasp of her own mentus abilities. She was already working with Isabelle and Hellen to learn quickening but because of the dangers surrounding the skill, Fantasma knew she needed to be properly trained instead of receiving ad-hoc lessons from the quickeners in the mountain. Though she was twelve, he made the decision to send her to masters school.
Once again, he used the privilege and authority that came with being Fantasma to make a special arrangement for Sharanel. She would be privately tutored by Professor Landerpool, widely known as the greatest quickener in the world. Landerpool taught at the prestigious Wincraft Masters School in Leviton and had reached a position within the staff where he mostly did research and taught the occasional class, only taking pupils who he felt were highly gifted. Upon hearing about Sharanel, he immediately agreed to teach her.
For the first two years of being trained by Landerpool, Sharanel was ferried back and forth to Fantasmal Mountain every school day by one of the guardians. At age fourteen, however, Sharanel begged the Fantasma to let her live on her own in Leviton. Since she was one year shy of what Mendalians considered adulthood, Fantasma grudgingly allowed it. She lived in campus housing at the Wincraft school and Fantasma eased his conscious by having Lawrence Stokenshire, the nephew of one of his chief staff members, check up on her periodically. Lawrence was a quaver and friend of Professor Landerpool, so this made sense.
Sharanel became fully qualified shortly after her fourteenth birthday but continued studying advanced quickener techniques with Professor Landerpool and his other pupil Thomas Goodfield. A year later, Sharanel’s experimentation led to the creation of the quickener gate concept, a revolution in quickening research. She presented this at a research conference with the help of Thomas and Professor Landerpool, earning her great accolades and cementing her position as one of the top quickeners in the world.
It was then that something truly unexpected happened. She was approached by Frederick Quicksilver, a paternal grandfather she never knew she had. It was then that Sharanel found out that she was part of a much larger and long-lived family than she ever knew.
The Quicksilvers were a distinguished family of quickeners who were in service to the royal house of Lodomite for generations before the country fell a few years prior. Her father, Luke was disowned and disavowed when he eloped with Winterbell, who was a baron’s daughter from the neighboring country of Pairnight. This was why Sharanel didn’t know any of her extended family. Frederick found out about Sharanel’s extraordinary abilities when she presented in front of the quickener’s research conference and sought to bring her back into the family.
Sharanel was torn and confused about this revelation. Though her mother’s family were wiped out in the war between Lodomite and Parinight, it seemed she had aunts, uncles, and a myriad of cousins on her father’s side that she never knew. Frederick, however, had ulterior motives for reaching out to her. The Lodomite Quicksilvers lost the majority of their status and prestige when Lodomite fell and was absorbed into the kingdom of Adimare. Frederick hoped to regain some of the family’s former glory by bringing Sharanel into the fold and touting her as the prodigy that came from his family, not knowing that she’d be raised by the Fantasma.
When Sharanel asked Fantasma about this, however, he told her the truth. When her parents died, he of course used his considerable resources to find her extended family and had his guardians reach out to find them. Unfortunately, neither the Quicksilvers, nor the Boatfreeds, Winterbell’s family, would acknowledge the young girl as part of their family because the two had eloped. Because of this, Fantasma took her in and raised her himself.
Once Sharanel realized the truth, she decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps and cut all ties with the Quicksilvers. She hated the fact that she might be associated with the Quicksilvers of the former nation of Lodomite regardless of her actual relationship with them and for almost a year after that, her enthusiasm in quickener research waned and she lost her motivation, not knowing what she wanted to do.
Fantasmal Quickener
Just before Sharanel’s seventeenth birthday, Helen Bensellnot announced her plans to retire from the position of Fantasmal Quickener and with the senior quickener’s encouragement, Sharanel decided to apply for the job. She had multiple reasons for doing this but the main one was because it would allow her to serve directly under Fantasma. Sharanel always felt indebted to Fantasma for taking her in. Though she never saw him as family, she was still grateful to him and wanted more than anything for him to be proud of her. To her, becoming Fantasmal Quickener would be the ultimate way to prove herself.
Her application and eventual appointment were extremely controversial. While Fantasmal Privilege allowed Fantasma to promote anyone to any position at any time for any reason without having to be accountable to anyone; the reality was that optics played an important role in the Fantasmal Government and the Fantasma wanted to be as fair as possible, even going out of his way to solicit quickeners who matched Sharanel’s skill. However, with Sharanel’s credentials, references, and knowledge of the mountain and a good portion of its staff, she was ultimately the best choice by any rubric, despite her age.
For Sharanel, this was the culmination of everything she’d worked for in her short life. Being able to serve Fantasma directly was a dream come true. No longer would she feel like she was constantly being taken care of by her benefactor, instead she could work with him and show that she was worthy of all the effort he put into her care. She resolved to prove herself to him and to anyone her doubted her abilities by being the best Fantasmal Quickener possible and intends to serve the Fantasma for the rest of her life.
Godfather
Towards Sharanel Quicksilver
History
Before officially becoming Fantasma, Darius was named Sharanel's godfather. After the death of both of her parents, Sharanel came to live at Fantasmal Mountain under Fantasma's care. When the previous Fantasmal Quickener resigned, Sharanel was promoted to the post and now serves as one of only two people who reports to the Fantasma.
Relationship Reasoning
Sharanel feels she owes everything to him and regards him less as family but as her benefactor. Sharanel's whole reason for becoming the Fantasmal Quickener is to express her loyalty and devotion to him.
Fantasma feels guilt for being the one who ordered Sharanel's parent's to there death by sending them on the mission to evacuate the mine. He wants to do everything he can to protect her.
