Northland

History

Northland is unsurprisingly the northernmost nation on mainland Menerem, and its environment is as expected, ranging from snowy forests to taiga to tundra. The founders of the Northland wanted a place where privacy and individual freedom are the most important virtues. They settled in lands no one else wanted in the cold and dreary north. The nation was only formally created and named during the Penrook Accord, when they were essentially forced to in order to protect their insular society.

The Northlands internal economy is driven more by barter than coin, with individuals travelling to nearby markets to trade when needed. They value self-sufficiency, however, and generally only barter when they must. Technologically, the Northlands are the least advanced mostly due to a lack of interest rather than a philosophical concern like their neighbors in Kharra. Northlanders are most commonly thought of as being hunters, farmers, fishers and fugitives and that is largely true.

Outside of its recalcitrant citizens, the Northlands are known for the winter wyrms that flourish in the cold forests. These beasts are similar to dragons in form but are not sentient creatures and only grow to the size of a large wolf. Their hides, fangs and individual scales are sometimes used in creating magical items and their blood is a potent additive for potions.

Notable Places

  • Katanrom: The capitol of Northland is often only half-filled at best. This collection of markets and warehouses is only filled once a month on market days. The Northern Council is located here, along with the few ambassadors and corporate liaisons that reside there. Wyrmling parts being delivered to the east coast also pass through here.
  • Port Serra: This port only barely deserves the name, being more of a bloated fishing village than a real city. Little money passes through this remote destination, mostly wyrmling parts travelling to the west.
