Personal history
Horatius was born on the 17th day of Kyzet 2482 AGF in the town of Lakeshore to a relatively ordinary life. While growing up he would help his father in his workshop crafting parts for watermills, and in his spare time he liked to sit on the cliff, next to the lighthouse, looking over the port. When Horatius was old enough he started to train in the art of swordplay and would drill with the Lakeshore Militia, proving to be a capable swordsmen and a decent crossbowman. Due to his exceptional skill Horatius caught the eye of the sheriff and was offered a chance to become a deputy, He accepted and for a short time he loved his work. After the botched case into the activities of the Lagoon Port Shipping Company operating out of the Lakeshore Harbor (known as The Sircassia incident), Horatius decided it was best for him to go back to a life of a craftsman.
In 2501 AGF a goblin hoard descended on the city and and the militia was mobilized, and moved to halt the hoard at a small strip of land known as "Bathazaar's Channel". Horatius distinguished himself as a ferocious fighter when he led a small group to hold one of the lasts bridges waiting to be demolished, having to hold it long enough to bait the horde in that direction so they didn't circle around the lake and attack the evacuation caravans. Having bought enough time for the refugees to flee Lakeshore, Horatius made a decision and asked for volunteers, the horde couldn't be stopped by his small band but they could inflict heavy losses. They damaged the bridge enough that it would take time to repair, thus making a crossing possible, but also gave his small group time to retreat to Lakeshore. Once inside the city, Horatius ordered that everything that could be burned to be rounded up and scattered all throughout Lakeshore, setting up lookouts to provide warning when the Goblins had arrived. The militiamen then lit their small fires, giving time for the inferno to grow and they began to fight their way to the harbor, the fighting was intense. At the dock his escape route was set, but Horatius had to ensure the fire had enough time to grow and trap the horde inside the city, so he and his men fought. Taking losses, Horatius ordered a final withdrawal to the last boat left in the port and sailed along the coastline, watching as the city burned the trapped goblin contingent.
After about a day sailing up the Eastbrook coast, Horatius noticed a banner and upon closer inspection realized it was the knights of Aramore. Making landfall he and his band made contact and reported the situation in Lakeshore to Bernard Ursel, the two set off to Hillfar and salvage the situation. After a brief confrontation with the current mayor, Bernard took command of Hillfar and assigned Horatius several dozen fighters and the few casters available, their mission was to delay the surviving goblins for as long as possible and buy time for fortification. using his caster to make artificial swamps to slow the advance and only engaging at range, Horatius slowed the advance greatly, delaying the horde for several weeks. He was eventually pushed back to the first line of Bernards Barriers, retreating back to Hillfar to join the reserve force, The fiercest fighting of The Bloody year was about to take place. For just over a week Horatius would fight: a line needed to be shored up, he would be there. A counterattack ordered, he charged. A element encircled, he broke through. He was so busy fighting he didn't realize what Bernard had set in motion and nearly drowned in the flood, and was barely rescued when one of the remaining towers threw him a line. Watching the horde get washed away he was left to contemplate, by fire he had been forged and by water he had been tested, he decided to leave his old life behind.
After The Bloody Year Horatius settled in Hillfar, and when Bernard Ursel was selected to become regional mayor Horatius petitioned to be appointed an officer of the city. Having already proved himself to Bernard, he quickly became his most trusted aide, a job he continues to this day.
