Kingdom on the brink - Session 7
General Summary
The party is busy for the next two days: Artimus and Oneiro were making plate armor. Talia, Ashara, and Gareth were digging pits and placing spikes. Hendred was praying and offering blessings to the town guards, Runsha was waiting on a message from his parents. Bernard Ursel found the party and went over the plan of defense with the group, stating that there were two walls (An outer and the inner wall), and that if they needed to they should retreat from the outer wall in the event they are being overrun. After he gets done briefing the party Bernard opens the doors and reveals that there is a feast for the defenders, thanks to the caravans the party were able to get through at the crossroads. Artimus sends out Fawkes to find the invaders camp, after one failed attempt to scout the leaders tent, Fawkes returns and Artimus turns the bird invisible and sends Fawkes back out. Fawkes learns about the plans for the first wave and reports back to Artimus, who goes to find Bernard. During that time Ashara and Gus joins some of the soldiers who are dancing, Runsha is observing the festivities, and Oneiro, Hendred, Gareth sit down to eat. Some of the party notices that Horatius Dragomir and Bernard are having a very animated discussion and that Horatius leaves to go to the town hall. Gareth and Hendred go to check on Horatius and find out that Bernard told him to be prepared to lead the town in the event of his death, an event Horatius had a hard time accepting. Artimus finds Bernard and relays the information he found to Bernard, Bernard thanks him and goes to find Horatius to discuss this new info. The majority of the party gets back together at the table and Artimus uses skywrite to warn the horde not to attack.
The next day the party gets ready and takes their position on the walls, Artimus and the catapults begin to fire at the first wave of incoming Worg riders, who run right into the spike pits that were concealed. A second wave of worgs appear and jump over the pits and make their way to the wall, the archers open up with a volley. As the worgs are advancing, three Ballistas and several groups of gnolls arrive to support the worgs by range. Some of the Worgs make it up the wall and start to attack the defenders, Talia uses moonbeam to deal with the worgs still on the ground, the Ballistas start to fire. Hendred dodges the first ballista bolt but gets hit with the second one, Ashara uses her gloves of missile snaring to outright catch the bolt aimed at her. Seeing an opportunity, Gareth jumps down from the wall putting himself on one side of a line of nine worgs and riders and unleashes his javelin of lightning, killing the majority of the creatures in that line, four orcs go to attack Gareth. The fighting on the walls intensifies and the catapults start to target the Ballistas, Ashara sounds the horn to start the ambush, and then joins the fray on the walls. As this is going on a group of orcs arrive to help attack the walls, realizing they need a way to cross the pits, they hold back as they come up with a plan. Gareth steps back against the wall and uses burning hands to fry three orcs in front of him and calls for a rope, Artimus casts invisibility on him, as he looks like he took a beating. The fighting on the wall is slowly turning to the defenders favor as the orcs on the other side of the pit figures out how to cross, and make their way forward with some planks, the gnoll archers are providing cover fire. The catapults destroy the last of the Ballistas and the party clears the walls, Gareth is pulled up by the guards who tossed him a rope. Finally Bernard arrives with reinforcements to attack the horde from behind, forcing them into the pits, there was enough bodies to completely fill the pits.
Artimus sends Fawkes out to find where the horde is at and finds out they have about an hour before they regroup and attack again. The party short rests and comes up with a plan of attack. Oneiro, Artimus, and Runsha stay at the wall with Bernard while the rest of the party goes and hides in a different area in an attempt to kill the war chief. The horde restarts its assault on that section of the wall, sending in worgs as the first wave. A second wave of Ballistas, mages, Orogs, the war chief and his personnel guard appear and the chief taunts Bernard. The party on the walls focus fire on the chief and force him to retreat, the hidden party members break cover and pursue the war chief. As the chief flees, more and more orcish reinforcements arrive to overwhelm the defenders, Gus stops and turns around to head towards the walls. As the new wave of reinforcements begin their attack, the dead begin to rise and begin to strike at the horde, Gus moves to the center of this and more dead begin to rise. The party attempts to pursue the war chief but his guard sets up screen between them and the chief. The defenders look noticeably shaken from seeing the dead rise, some even saying it's an act of Kyzet, The Overseer.
25th Day of Terseg
