Kingdom on the Brink - Session 71
General Summary
The party splits up briefly. Uriel, Merigold, and Rosemary move towards Gregori. They enter a area that used to be a dungeon, but has been turned into some sort living area filled with commoners. Uriel's presence changes their demeaner and says the "the lord of Lakecliff (see Lakecliff Ruins) is here to save them," and he introduces his companion Merigold. A halfling steps out of one of the cells and repeats Merigold's name, Merigold runs up and hugs her, having found her wife. During this time Duromar, Knott, and Ashara search the body of Calra Belastor and then they start to catch up to the rest of the party, before they get up there Duromar gets distracted by a room exuding arcane power. Before Duromar can examine the room and Merigold can catch up with her wife the split party hears noises coming from the halls. Rosemary and Gregori move up and see a Death Knight and Kalzoz (the Lich), Duromar and Knott hear Kellan Leagallow and a Bone Swarm. Kalzoz uses ray of frost several times on Gregori, Gregori moves back and drags Leree (Merigold's wife), trying to get her out of danger. Knott moves up and activates his thunder step ability, sending a wave of force damage through the Bone Swarm and Kellan. Duromar and sings his bladesong and casts haste on himself, Kellan attempts to banish Knott, but resists it. Ashara casts beacon of hope, but quickly loses it when Kellan casts finger of death on her, Uriel heals himself and Rosemary casts mass cure wounds. Duromar moves up and strikes with his rapier, Kellan responds by casting Hellish rebuke, Kellan then hurls Bob through hell. The Bone Swarm swirls around Duromar, Uriel moves up and drinks a potion of haste and unleashes a furious melee on Kalzoz. Leree mounts Gregori and Gregori charges through the fleeing commoners, knocking them all over in the process. Kalzoz tries to respond with a maddening touch, but Uriel's dodges, Kellan tries to use dominate monster on Duromar but he resists. A Death Knight moves up past Kalzoz and hurls a hellfire orb but is evaded by most of the party. Merigold attempts to cast mirror image but it gets counter-spelled by Kalzoz. The fight devolves into a melee slog of the undead attempting paralyze the party and the party swinging back, Kellan's legendary resistances get burned through and another Death Knight joins the fray. Kalzoz begins to weaken after being struck repeatedly from Rosemary, Uriel, and Merigold. Kalzoz attempts to casts dimension door, but Uriel counter-spells it, the northern Death Knight unleashes a destruction wave that prones Uriel. Knott finishes Kellan and Bob returns shortly thereafter, Duromar destroys the Bone Swarm which leaves them free to deal with the southern Death Knight. Uriel strikes down Kalzoz and the northern Death Knight casts another destruction wave but is felled shortly thereafter. Knott lets out another thunder step, which nearly kills the Death Knight and Duromar finishes it off.
The party quickly investigates the area, finding the phylacteries of both Kalzoz and Kellan, the violently destroy both. A large explosion of necrotic energy gets released from both dark objects, sapping the party of more strength. During the fight Ashara was flying Leree out of danger, Uriel helps the other commoners out of the estate, so they don't die from the zombies above. On the way out he notices a giant hole in several of the walls, believing something escaped the room. Uriel gets them into a small building outside the main estate and waits for the rest party. Rosemary finds a bag of coins and Merigold takes the head of Kellan Leagallow, Duromar performs detect magic as a ritual, he observes that there's only residual magic left from the phylactery/pact focus that he destroyed. The party gathers up and moves upstairs with haste, as Duromar moves towards the entrance on the main level he manages to dodge a ray, he yells at the party to get around him, he's going teleport them out. Uriel moves out of the small building, sensing something isn't right, a couple seconds later he gets a message from Rosemary that Duromar is teleporting them away. Uriel decides to stay behind and try to help the commoners, Duromar casts teleport, it ends up being a rough ride and they take some force damage and they end up almost two miles of target from the inn. Uriel has the commoners follow him to the barn they originally teleported into, he realizes they are being followed and he summons his nightmare. The Nightmare charges back as Uriel and his group take refuge in the barn, the Nightmare finds a Death Tyrant is following them and tramples it, unfortunately it gets petrified by an eye ray. The Death Tyrant approaches the barn and looks inside, as Uriel gets ready to fight it, Arryn Sylris (the elf Uriel helped back at House Valeros, see Kingdom on the Brink - Session 62) appears behind it. She stabs the Death Tyrant and says that Uriel should have teleported out with the party, his nobility will get him killed. They engage the Death Tyrant and Arryn manages to goad it and says she'll lead it away as a distraction. Uriel takes to the air to get a view of the battlefield, he sees some paths that are sparser in undead (and also sees the undead aren't acting in a unified manner). He leads the group of commoners out, when he gets to the forward lines, he throws his javelin (destroying two zombies) and charges into the remaining undead as the commoners get away. Uriel summons a goat of terror and has it bull through the undead and he makes it to the other side, the city guards rush forward to destroy the remaining undead.
The party waits for a tense hour back at the inn, they saw Ashara and Leree were there, but Uriel was not. When Uriel makes it back the party spends the rest of the afternoon resting. Duromar studies his book of the stilled tongue, Merigold, Leree, Rosemary, and Knott spend the time eating and playing music (the commoners Uriel rescued are there as well). Uriel tells Ashara about how their mission has been completed, he tosses a blanket over her and she transforms from her dragon form into her human form. He picks her up and they go back to their room to celebrate, the time goes into the early evening. Uriel had sent a message after he got back to the main lines of defense reporting the success of their mission. The party is approached by Shia Boriz and the other two councilors at the inn, they give the party 6,000 platinum. They then ask the party for help in one final mission, the councilors who supported Kalzoz are either captured or dead. The councilors who supported Bridgeford had escaped shortly before the dams opened up, presumably to Bridgeford's domain, Crystal Bay. They want the party to finish off the last bits of corruption plaguing Bralor. The party negotiates lands, titles, rewards, and arrangements. The party long rests.

The afternoon of the second day they come across a Blackguard, War Priest, Alchemical Archer, and a Herald of the Great Wyrm blocking their path. They decide it's too risky to try and bypass them and so they charge. Amber casts greater invisibility on Rosemary and she teleports to the edge of the Herald's aura, she then moves in and starts to dodge. The Herald and the War Priest flank Rosemary and they land several hits, the Archer attempts to fire several volleys but they get dodged or deflected. The Blackguard attempts to smite, but Duromar counter-spells it, Duromar then casts negative energy flow on the Black guard. Knott and Merigold flank the Blackguard and land several strikes, Bob finishes him off with a trampling charge. Rosemary stuns the War Priest and focuses on the Herald, Uriel moved up to flank and lands several smites. The Herald lands two claw of fate attacks on Uriel, which restrains him. Amber hurls eldritch blasts into the Herald, Duromar and Bob trample the War Priest (killing him). Knott moves to the Archer and let's loose a flurry of blows, the Archer and Herald are quickly overwhelmed.

Knott asks for freedom to walk the land of Bralor (he will get an official letter proclaiming him a friend of the royal council). He also asks for something he knows Del Varis would have wanted as well.
Rosemary is fine with another quest, as long there fair compensation (money) involved.
Duromar asks for some information and a favor.
The party also asks for pardons concerning the wanted posters and that the giants be treated as equals and recieve good land as well (land from the traitors will be taken and given to the giants).
