Kingdom on the Brink - Session 72
General Summary
The party searches the immediate area, they found a cave where their enemy set up camp, they found some poster warning of the dangers of heresy. Duromar finds some gold and poetry on the Herald's corpse (speaking of the return of the avatar being close at hand). The party continues their journey, later in the evening they find a temple and Uriel, Amber Kerogen, and Rosemary, enter and they see some guards and common people listening to a priest. The priest speaks of this being times of crisis and uncertainty, that in these times the nine dragons pick a champion. The priest continues to speak about how this champion would be the dragons voice and will, this champion being none other than Lord Bridgeford. The party starts to get uneasy, and the priest finishes his message and begins to speak to everyone, he starts to approach Uriel, Rosemary, and Amber. He welcomes them to the temple and offers them a place to stay for the night. Uriel says they're messengers for Lord Bridgeford and they cannot stay unfortunately, Uriel can tell the priest is suspicious but isn't pressed on the subject further. The party meets back up with Duromar and says the temple is corrupt and they're leaving, they push on for a few more hours. Duromar, Knott, and Rosemary sneak into a wooded area and Duromar casts magnificent mansion. Uriel summons some of his fey horses and use them to create a false trail, the Amber and Uriel uses dimension door to appear next to the rest of the party. The party is about to enter when they see a group from the temple tracking the false trail. The party enters the mansion and begins long rest, Uriel and Knott exit the mansion, Uriel casts control weather and over the course of 2 hours he starts a blizzard. Knott makes snow angels but decides to head back in after the hail starts, Duromar writes in his book of the still tongue. Writing appears, asking him if he values knowledge and useful things (like this book), Duromar confirms. The book asks if he would like to go now, he says he has certain obligations but once he's done, he would want to pursue this knowledge; the book says "excellent." Uriel comes back in, surprising the party when he comes in with snow on his shoulder. The party long rests.
The party sets out back on the road, they quickly find the trail of people that were following them the evening before. They eventually get to a bridge, it's occupied by an armed group, Uriel, Duromar, and Knott move forward. The Blackguard moves up and shouts at them to halt and asks who goes there, Uriel says they are pilgrims heading to Crystal Bay. There's a back and forth, Bob and Rosemary notice that the trail that they were following, it intersects at the bridge. Bob points this out to Duromar, who walks up to Uriel and says we're done here and they move away from the bridge. They decide to travel along the river to find an area to cross the river secretly, they run into four Ice Devils. The first Ice Devil raises an ice wall around Duromar, Rosemary, and Bob. Duromar upcasts scorching ray on a section of the ice wall, Knott jumps onto the ice dome and Rosemary casts greater invisibility on Uriel, and he flies over on his gryphon. Rosemary moves up and stuns one of the Ice Devils, which causes the rest of the ice dome to disappear. The party moves up into melee, the Ice Devils land some strikes, but the party is able to handle them. They finish off the Ice Devils and Knott collects some of the acid from their bodies. Uriel reminds Duromar about his ooze, he wonders how it would react to the acid, Knott gives him some acid. The ooze approaches it and seems disgusted but eventually consumes it. The party crosses the river and continues on to the Crystal Bay in a stealthy manner.
The party gets to Crystal Bay and gets to an inn, as they are traveling, they notice more cult like influences of Nadranth through the city. The party decides so split, Duromar and Uriel go looking for supplies, Knott and Amber go to the noble quarter to find information on House Bridgeford, Rosemary stays behind in the inn, and Merigold scouts out the city. Knott assumes that the Bridgefords will be in the biggest estate but finds there are several large estates. During their investigation they overhear some conversation about a gala the Bridgefords have a significant role in. Knott tells Amber follow his lead and he acts as a trusted servant from the Astana Commonwealth and asks some of the locals where he can find the Bridgeford estate. He has committed a social blunder and has lost their invitation, after some questioning, he gets some directions to the estate. They head there and then use a potion of gaseous form to enter the estate and look for information on the gala, they find some pamphlets with a location and time. They cannot pick up the pamphlet while they're still in their gaseous form, but there's some estate staff around. They are about to run out of time, so Knott transforms back and stuns one, grabs a pamphlet, and Ambers performs several short teleports to get them out.
Uriel and Duromar start looking for shops and find one that sells several potions and magical items. They drop a lot of money to get potions of invulnerability, resistance, healing, as well as several magical items. During their transactions they enquire about any collectors of ancient artifacts, after some convincing (and flashing equally ancient artifacts) they get a name, Cyemore the gnome. They head to Cyemore's home, which is very much made for a gnome, they are able to persuade Cyemore to let them in (Uriel has a hard time standing up given the low height). Cyemore leads them to his artifact room, Uriel tells him a little about his time from that age (which leaves Cyemore a little shocked). When they get to the room Uriel says that the armor he has was gift on his wedding day, he persuades Cyemore to trade it to him (giving him his own equally as ancient armor and platinum to make up the difference). During this time Merigold scouts out the city and finds several monoliths, newly constructed, around the city and realizes they are in specific locations around a central focus. Rosemary gets some drinks at the bar and enquires about the city; the barkeep talks about the public works House Bridgeford has brought to the city. The barkeep shouts out some rowdy workers to keep it civil as this is a respectable establishment. He gets back to talking to Rosemary and says how the public works were funded by precious metal shipments from Stormhold.
The party regroups and shares the information they uncovered, the gala is tomorrow, they plan to be there and put a stop to the Bridgeford's. Knott and Merigold realize the location of the gala is also the central point the monoliths encircle and Duromar believes it will at as some sort of amplification circle for some sort of arcane ritual. Merigold plans on stealing several barrels of alchemical fire and rig them blow up some of the monoliths during the gala, hopefully causing a disruption. The party realizes they don't have much information to go off of, but they don't have the time to wait
