14a. A Cleric's Legacy - Behind the Scenes

Following the adventurers success in solving the issues at the Salt Mine north of Trg (12. Salted Bat & Soured Friendships), Master Novak, a member of The Megom, also asked the adventurers if they could find his child, Gherro, who had gone missing recently. The local town watch had not found him yet, and Master Novak offered a considerable sum to find this.   After events in 14. A Cleric's Legacy, the side quest had technically concluded for the adventurers, as they had exhausted all chances to solve this side quest.   The adventurers had enough clues to correctly believe the person who took the kid was Plain Martin, the Silver Fang's healer, but were ultimately unable to find the kid.   Given that Plain Martin was killed by the adventurer's very early on, before there was even any real evidence of wrong doing except working for the Silver Fangs as a healer and that he wanted by the Soulguard, more obvious clues of this side quests clues would have appeared through the Silver Fang's plot, but alas that was not so!   Hence, it was considerably difficult to get this one completed, especially if players had forgotten the limited clues given.   During 10. Ash, Smoke & Tears, when Plain Martin was held by Surina and Gilles obliterated him, we rolled some percentile dice to see what was left. Giles had rolled something like 97% of Plain Martin's body was destroyed.

"All that was left of man known as Plain Martin was part of a neck chain Surina had grasped, charred ash and a stink of some cologne the man had worn."
- Chapter 10, Ash, Smoke & Tears

Gilles also found a damaged silver key that went flying from Plain Martin's body after the cleric's body was destroyed.   If the key had been investigated, it would have ultimately led to a locksmith in Trg who would recognise they key that is used to lock access grates to old underground water tunnels around Trg, access which was usually restricted to certain people which the town Mer knew of. The town Mer would have been able to provide further details on how the key went missing and to what certain access points the key opened, thereby leading to where the kid had been kept by Plain Martin.   The smell of the cologne was also a clue, though a harder one. In the game, I had noted specifically that there was a distinct smell to it.
Speaking more to some Silver Fangs members about Plain Martin would lead to their comments of the annoying cologne the cleric wore, and even carried around a few large bottle of the stuff whenever they moved between hideouts. The cologne wafted strongly, and often those Silver Fangs would ask Plain Martin to take the stinking bottles elsewhere.   When the adventurers searched the Silver Fang's hideout the second time, Bal'Aur spoke to a dwarven neighbour. The dwarf had made a comment regarding a strange smell in his garden fields, but thankfully his wife's goulash cut through this.
If the adventurers pressed the dwarf for more, they could have searched his field and would ultimately find the source of the smell coming through a grate and possibly remembered it was similiar to the cologne Plain Martin wore. Breaking open the grate would shortly lead to the kid's whereabouts, and a stash of broken cologne bottles which had produced the noxious smell.   Plain Martin wore the cologne for a reason.
When Surina and Bal'Aur met the Silver Fangs behind the hideout, Surina had cast Detect Good and Evil for the very first time, and found that there was definitely the presence of evil. However, Surina misinterpreted the spell, as what the spell actually does is as follows:
For the duration, you know if there is an aberration, celestial, elemental, fey, fiend, or undead within 30 feet of you.

Hence, it doesn't state if a creature is of evil or good alignment, but whether there's a particular type of creature within the vicinity. As the GM, I should have gotten Surina's player to read out what the spell does, as I also was not familiar with the spell and also incorrectly assumed it detected alignment!   However, despite the incorrect assumption (which was cleared up between the GM and Surina's player via PM), it still worked out well for there was indeed an aberration in the Silver Fangs, and it was Plain Martin.
Had Gilles' Guiding Bolt not destroyed Plain Martin entirely, at least leaving 50% (being the parts from the torso and below), a detailed investigation of his body would have found a gruesome mutation occurring around the dead man's groin region, which smelt awful. Hence the cologne was Plain Martin's attempts in hiding this.
The reason for the mutation is still under wraps, as it relates to other, broader parts of the world story.   As for the necklace, that simply an icon of the Holy order and bore no clue.   The side plot had been planned in consequence of a quick survey competed by the players who were interested in a darker, more mature theme, but prematurely ended when Plain Martin was killed very early on!     Although the adventurers have not found the boy, Gherro Novak's story is not over.
