The Sky-Blessed Nation of Galeland

The smaller flying islands hold entire cities made of towering spires and aeries, while the mainland is home to farms, livestock, and those races unfortunate enough to be grounded. Small flying vehicles have been developed to aid in the transport of goods to and from the flying islands and between Galeland and the other Isles.

Structure

The combined society of the long lived Avariel and the short lived Aarakocra are led by a “Council of Ages” consisting of six to seven Aarakocra (two from each decade) and seven Avariel (one from each century) who are nominated by their peers at the turn of each decade/century. They vote on matters and in order to pass into effect a debated issue must receive at least four votes from each race.

History

  • 250 BC-0 PC: The Elemental Isles are one land, home to the Elementals and their creations.

  • 3692-3702 PC: Dragons begin to leave the isles. Some lesser races choose to follow.
Full Timeline

Demography and Population

The combined society of Aarakocra and Avariel is an odd pairing that have adapted to become one of the most successful civilizations in the world. The short-lived Aarakocra bring constantly shifting views and ideas while the long-lived Avariel have the wisdom and knowledge to implement them. Aarakocra tend to work as warriors, scouts, and traders while the Avariel act as scholars, craftsmen, and warrior trainers, trades whose skills take years longer to perfect than Aarakocra have in their lifetime. Avariel are more likely to serve on the Gairtiin, so it is considered a sign of great honor when an Aarakocra is selected to serve.
The flying races pity humans for their grounded nature, but do not look down upon them (except literally). However, the humans admittance to the flying cities is tightly regulated, mostly for their own safety as the fliers have not bothered to implement guard rails.
The Genasi are respected and revered for their connection to The Sky. However, many Aarakocra and Avariel are convinced that they are secretly capable of flight, which has led to the accidental death of quite a few Genasi.

Military

The Avariel serve as military officers and trainers while the Aarakocra fill most of its ranks. They keep a force big enough military to deter and defend from dragon attacks, but the high cliffs of the mainland and flying islands are easy enough to defend from invasion that they don’t particularly worry about hosting a large force.

The Gairtiin

The most elite warriors of each society are selected by their government to guard and protect the planar portals. They are greatly honored members of society and given great respect from all the residents of The Elemental Isles.

Technological Level

Arcane Magic

Learned arcana is popular amongst the humans and avariel. The Genasi are often gifted with innate arcana due to their tie to the primal planes.

Natural Magic

Most of the residents of the islands consider magic regarding plants and animals to be inferior to the elemental arcana.

Divine Magic

Humans are most likely to serve as traditional clerics or paladins. Rarely the winged races are gifted divine powers by the Sky. Genasi are more likely to receive these blessings given their inherent connection to these divine entities.

Religion

The winged races revere “the Sky” in a deific sense. They are the Sky's children; they respect her, they fear her, they cherish her, and they give thanks to her for protecting them and providing them with her bounty. To be separated from her by grounding is the greatest punishment and saddest circumstance. They consider the wind to be her voice and will often meditate for many hours in the highest towers in attempt to decipher her words.   Humans: Most humans adopt the religion of whichever society they live amongst. Though they have no standing temples to their own gods, many have a small shrine or two in their home.
