The Beleaguered Lands

Bounded to the North and South by Orc Tribes, the beleaguered lands are protected by a number of small Nordan and Maygan kingdoms, working in tandem with The Northern Dwarfholds. Protected by these warriors are the clans of Twneli Cœdwig, and the halflings of The Shirelands.

Geography

The Beleaguered Lands boast a wide array of biomes. In the west are the hilly plains of The Riddermark forming a natural barrier against the Talânurz Orcs. Moving east, the land flattens out and the fertile soil allows for the agrarian life of The Shirelands. As one goes further north and east, the terrain becomes more hilly and covered by coniferous forests, until finally one comes to the mountains of the The Northern Dwarfholds. The Bartoku Orcs occupy the frozen tundra and icy regions in the far north of the continent.

Localized Phenomena

The winters in the Beleaguered Lands are particularly harsh, with temperatures as low as -40 Fahrenheit in the central portions, and getting down to -15 Fahrenheit in most places.

History

From the earliest days, Idish tribes inhabited this region, constantly at war with the Orcs. During the Age of Magic and the Age of Empires, these tribes were ruled first by the Nehken Empire and then by the Caliarcan Empire. Late in the Age of Empires (circa 1160 IM), the Methyan migration occured, causing a greater influx of humans, gnomes, dwarves and halflings into the region. The Methyan invaders intermarried with the local Idish tribes and with the Nordan people to the West, producing the people known today as the Maygan people. At this time also, the Northern Dwafholds were founded, providing the first instance of organized governance in the region.

With the fall of the Caliarcan Empire and the dawn of the Age of Heros, the Orcs began pushing further into the beleaguered lands. The Northern Dwarfholds held the tides of Orcs at bay and began equipping the humans in the region to push the invaders back. With the movement of peoples following the fall of the Caliarcan Empire, Gnomes from the east and Nordens from the West also migrated into this region. Eventually, four marches were founded - the three Norden Skaldarlands in the north and the Maygan kingdom of The Riddermark to the west. With those human kingdoms acting as bulwarks, the fertile lands that would become The Shirelands and Twneli Cœdwig were settled.
